DENVER, Colo. – On Wednesday afternoon, the Regis University men's soccer team (5-4, 3-4 RMAC) lost 1-0 to the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers (8-3, 6-1 RMAC) in a tightly contested battle.
How it Happened: Regis looked to have an aggressive game plan to get out and attack early. Senior
Sawyer Lincoln opened with the first shot for either squad in the fifth minute, but nothing came of it. Redshirt-freshman
Will Eslinger took two shots in the first 10 minutes but each of them sailed wide left.
The 0-0 tie was broken in the 32
nd minute when a series of shots were blocked and deflected, all leading to the ball dropping at the feet of the Orediggers' Ryan Wilson who connected on his shot and sent it into the back of the net.
Trailing 1-0, the Rangers continued to search for their breakthrough moment or opportunity in the second half. Most their opportunities came at the end of the game when they pushed all their players up the field in an attempt to overload the defense.
Missed, blocked and saved shots led to many missed opportunities for Regis. The CSM defense clamped down and consistently cleared the ball from their offensive zone and RU could not find an answer before time ran out.
Game Notes: Lincoln, Eslinger and freshman
John Halter each had two shots in the game despite being outshout 12-8 by the visiting Orediggers. The home squad managed only two corner kicks while CSM tallied eight in the match. Goalkeeper
Ciaran Gibson made seven saves in the game while facing 12 shots and allowing one goal.
Up Next for the Rangers: The men's soccer team will travel to Rapid City, South Dakota to face the Hardrockers of South Dakota Mines on Friday, October 6 at 6 p.m.
