ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Regis Rangers men's soccer team (7-7, 5-7 RMAC) avenged their loss to the Adams State University Grizzlies (7-8-1, 4-7-1) from one week ago with a 1-0 win over ASU on Sunday afternoon.
How It Happened: ASU came out firing with the first three shots of the game before Regis finally got a header shot from a corner kick in the 11
th minute.
Following a foul, and a yellow card on the Grizzlies in the 35
th minute, the Rangers earned another corner kick. Freshman
John Halter delivered a ball into the box that bounded out to sophomore
Luca Kother who took the shot, scoring his second goal of the season which gave the visitors a 1-0 lead late in the first half.
RU clamped down on defense and did not allow the Grizzlies to take another shot in the final 32:55 of the opening half. With a 1-0 lead, Regis looked to stick to their game plan as they turned a little more defensive.
Both teams put together attacks, but neither team could convert any of their opportunities. Junior
Chase Webert was challenged more in the second half, but he stood his ground which led to four saves and his first shutout of the 2017 season.
Game Notes: Despite the win, the Rangers were outshot 18-14, but they put seven shots on goal to only four for the home squad. Surprisingly, the Grizzlies also held an advantage in the corner kick department, 7-3, but in the end the only numbers that mattered were the numbers on the scoreboard where RU outscored ASU 1-0. Kother notched his second goal of the season which proved to be the game-winner.
Up Next for the Rangers: The men's soccer team will finish the regular season with two home matches against the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs Mountain Lions on Thursday, October 26 at 3 p.m. followed by the season finale on Saturday, October 28 against the Colorado State University – Pueblo ThunderWolves at 1:30 p.m.
