DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team (7-8, 5-8 RMAC) fell 4-1 to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (7-7-3, 7-3-3 RMAC) on Thursday afternoon despite taking an early 1-0 lead.
How It Happened: Regis jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when redshirt-freshman
Will Eslinger slotted the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal. This was the forward's eighth goal of the season that came in the 15
th minute of the game as senior
Sawyer Lincoln picked up the assist.
The Rangers kept most of the possession through the first half before Jake McAllister scored a hat trick for UCCS that RU was unable to recover from.
The visitors responded in the 33
rd minute when Corey Carabajal played a through ball past the Regis back line to McAllister who was able to find the right side of the goal to knot the score at one goal apiece. Less than two minutes later, he received a pass from Mario Mandel and was able to chip junior goalkeeper
Chase Webert from a tough angle to take a 2-1 edge over the Rangers.
14 minutes into the second half, Alex Vonholle fed McAllister a pass that put him on a breakaway and ended with his third goal of the contest.
Blake Barnes put the game out of reach when he netted a penalty kick past the outstretched hand of Webert in the 86
th minute.
Game Notes: RU outshot the Mountain Lions 18-15 but it was the visitors that put more shots on target. UCCS had 11 shots on goal compared to six for Regis. Eslinger scored the Rangers' only goal as he took a team-high five shots, putting three of them on target. McAllister led the Mountain Lions with five total shots, four on goal and three goals. The corner kick battle was also tilted in RU's favor 6-2 and Webert was credited with a season-high seven saves in the match, facing a total of 15 shots.
