Box Score PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (1-3) came up one run short, 4-3, against the Colorado State University - Pueblo ThunderWolves (3-4) in a Friday afternoon non-conference battle between two Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) schools.
How It Happened: The first run of the game came on a wild pitch from Regis that allowed one run to score in the bottom of the first inning. The Rangers responded with a run of their own in the top half of the second as a single up the middle from junior
Chris Kobar (1-2, BB).
The visitors added runs in the top of the third and fourth innings to take a 3-1 lead over the ThunderWolves. Junior
Andrew Bryniarski (2-4, RBI) drove in senior
Max Fabricant (2-4, BB, R)to score in the third, while junior
Christian Bitar came around to score his second run of the game on an error by the shortstop in the fourth.
From that point on, the home squad would lock down the defense and take over on offense. CSU-Pueblo scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. RU was unable to scratch across another run and dropped the first game of a scheduled three-game weekend.
Game Notes: Senior
Brad Thoutt pitched four innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits, walking two batters and striking out three. Redshirt-sophomore
Matt Heibult came on in long relief throwing four innings, giving up two hits and not allowing an earned run while striking out two.
Fabricant and Bryniarski led the way with two hits apiece, and juniors
Zach Dedin (1-1, pinch-hit) and
Connor Rochon (1-4), sophomore
Logan Heflebower (1-4) and Kobar were the only other players to register hits in the game for Regis. Collectively, the Rangers left seven runners on base, grounded into two double plays and struck out eight times. Defensively, the team did not commit a single error while the home team committed three.
Next Up for the Rangers: The baseball team will continue to play this weekend as they match up with another RMAC opponent tomorrow in Adams State University (3-5) at 11 a.m. before they conclude the weekend with another single game matchup with the ThunderWolves on Sunday at 11 a.m.
