Box Score PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (3-3) exploded for 10 runs in a 10-1 rout of the Colorado State University - Pueblo ThunderWolves (4-5) on Sunday afternoon.
How It Happened: For the second straight game, it was Regis who drew first blood. This time it happened in the top of the first inning as junior
Garrett Skillings singled to center field, driving in senior
Max Fabricant for the first run of the game.
In the second inning, the Rangers added two more runs on singles from Fabricant and sophomore
Logan Heflebower that plated redshirt-senior
Geordy Smith and freshman
Ryan Tierney to take a 3-0 lead.
Tierney singled home Skillings and junior
Chris Kobar in the third inning, and junior
Christian Bitar had a sacrifice fly to left field in the fourth that scored senior
Josh Newell from third base. After four innings, RU was in command with a 7-0 lead.
The fifth inning was big for Regis as Fabricant added to the lead with a two-RBI single that brought Tierney and Smith around to score. Newell then doubled and Fabricant came around to give the visitors an impressive 10-0 lead after the top of the fifth. CSU-P got their lone run in the bottom of the fifth, as freshman
Cobe Karhoff pitched a strong bottom half of the sixth, and junior
Patrick Kenny struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to give the Rangers their third win of the season.
Game Notes: Junior
Noah Gotsis (W, 1-0) picked up his first win of the season as he pitched five innings, allowing three hits and only one earned run. He walked one batter and struck out two others. Four players for RU had two-hit games including Fabricant (2-4) who drove in a career-high four RBI's on the day, Newell (2-3, 2B, RBI), Skillings (2-4, 2B, RBI) and Smith (2-4, 2B). As a team, RU hit 11-29 (.379 BA), they did not commit a single error, and stole four bases.
Next Up for the Rangers: The baseball team will return home for a four-game series with the Rogers State University Hillcats (6-2) this weekend, February 24-26. The first game will be Friday at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The series finale will be on Sunday at noon.
