Fabricant's walk-off earns series victory for the Rangers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (6-4) split the Sunday doubleheader against the Rogers State University Hillcats (9-5) on Sunday afternoon, picking up the series win (3-1) thanks to a walk-off single from senior Max Fabricant in the bottom of the 11th inning.

Game One - For the second straight game, the visitors drew first blood as they pushed across one run in the top of the third inning.
The Rangers could not find any rhythm in the middle innings and Rogers State took advantage in the top of the sixth inning extending their lead by two runs, 3-0, after junior Noah Gotsis left the game.

In the bottom half of the sixth and seventh innings, RU threatened to mount a comeback as they put runners on base, but each time they were unable to capitalize. The game ended with a ground ball to the first baseman who touched first base for the final out, giving Rogers State their first win of the series by a score of 3-0.

Game Notes: Gotsis (L, 1-1) pitched five strong innings, giving up only one run on five hits while striking out seven batters. The home team managed only three hits in game one with senior Max Fabricant, junior Christian Bitar, and freshman Ryan Tierney all went 1-for-3 in the game. 

Game Two – The Hillcats opened the game scoring two runs on two solo homeruns in the top half of the second inning, but Regis responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the second.
Rogers State then added another run in the top of the third inning as a leadoff walk came around to score on a double to the right center field gap. After the visiting half of the third, the Rangers found themselves behind 3-1.
A couple innings later, RU finally got back on track as senior Josh Newell connected on a three-run bomb to right field giving Regis a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Three straight singles from the Hillcats put the pressure on the Rangers defense with zero outs in the top of the sixth inning. After getting one batter to ground into a fielder's choice, a single to left field tied the game at four runs apiece, with the bases still loaded. 

Rogers State pushed two more runs across in the top of the sixth to take a 6-4 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, freshman Ryan Tierney connected on a solo homer to left field to bring the home team within one run 6-5 before moving to the seventh. 

Tierney came to the plate in the bottom of the eighth with runners on first and third. The freshman laid down a bunt single scoring the runner from third to tie the game at six runs after eight innings.  

The game carried into extra innings and after threatening in both the bottom of the ninth and tenth innings, RU finally came through in the bottom of the 11th as senior Max Fabricant ripped a single to right field bringing in Tierney from second base for the 7-6 win over the Hillcats.

Game Notes: Tierney finished the game going 4-for-5 with a homerun, scoring the winning run, and collecting two RBI's. Fabricant (2-4, RBI), Newell (2-4, HR, 3 RBI's), and juniors Garrett Skillings (2-5) and Chris Kobar (2-5) all collected two hits in a game that saw the home team combine for 12 hits. Freshman Patrick Kenny (W, 2-0) picked up his second win in as many days as he was the pitcher on the mound for both walk-off victories yesterday and today.

Next Up for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will remain at home for a four-game series with the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs Mountain Lions next weekend starting on Friday, March 3 through Sunday March 5.
