Big bats lift Rangers, win series 3-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University softball team closed out the final day of the opening Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series with the UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions with a pair of wins. The Rangers fought from behind in both games to take the series 3-1 improving to an overall record of 11-9 and 3-1 in the RMAC.
 
Carlie Sexton was reliable at the plate for the Rangers throughout the day going 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs and five RBIs. Delaney McGinn added four RBIs while Melissa Heronema went 3-for-6 in the box scoring one run and tallying two RBIs.
 
Game 1: Consistent with her first at bat yesterday, Ca. Sexton put another over the left field fence to give RU a 1-0 lead early in the bottom of the first. The Mountain Lions took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third with a two-run homerun on two outs by Melissa Martinek.
 
The Rangers took the lead back in the bottom of the fourth when Heronema singled to right field. That hit, with help from an error by the right fielder, brought two runs across the plate to give Regis a 3-2 lead.
 
Ca. Sexton tallied a pair of RBIs on a double to right center that scored Bradey King and Macy Cox, who both reached on walks. Regis sat in the driver's seat with a 5-2 lead headed into the final innings of the game.
 
Heronema notched another single in the bottom of the sixth on one out. Smart base-running saw her steal second and advance to third on the throwing error. With Heronema in scoring position, Alyssa Finger got in on the action with a double of her own to add another to the board, 6-2.
 
UCCS brought one final run across in the top of the seventh but Logan Losh recorded her ninth strikeout to end game one, 6-3.
 
Game Notes: Losh pitched in all seven innings on the mound for RU striking out nine batters in 31 faced. Losh improves to an overall record of 8-3. Ca. Sexton went 2-for-2 at the plate with one walk. She scored one run and had three RBIs. Heronema went 2-for-3 in the box tallying one run and two RBIs of her own. The Rangers narrowly outhit the Mountain Lions 7-6. Heronema and Cox stole the only two bases for Regis.
 
Game 2: UCCS jumped out to an early 4-0 lead scoring two apiece in the top halves of the third and fourth innings. Ca. Sexton was on the mark again blasting her second homerun of the day, this time over the center field fence. The Rangers brought one more across in the bottom of the fourth to come within one, 4-3.
 
The Mountain Lions sat in control of a 5-3 lead halfway through the game. Regis loaded the bases for the second-straight inning in the fifth forcing UCCS to make a pitching change. On one out, McGinn placed a ball in center field that allowed runners on second and third to score locking things up at 5-5.
 
The Rangers took their first lead of the game, 6-5, in the bottom of the sixth on a one-out solo shot over right field by Emily John. On two outs with a runner on first, the Mountain Lions made another pitching change. Taylor Armitage singled up the middle on the very next at bat to score King from second. McGinn immediately followed that up getting in on the homerun action with a two-run shot over left field.
 
Regis controlled a 9-6 lead headed into the final inning. An RU error on the leadoff at bat followed by a double to left center brought the tying Mountain Lion run to the plate. Armitage went to work on the UCCS batters forcing two into ground outs and the other to pop up lifting the Rangers to victory.
 
Game Notes: Armitage pitched in the final three innings to earn the win and improve to an overall record of 3-6. Armitage faced 15 batters tallying two strikeouts. Losh started the game on the mound throwing in the opening four innings. Losh tallied four more strikeouts to finish the day with 13. John went 3-for-4 scoring three runs and tallying an RBI. King went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs and a walk. McGinn added a 2-for-4 performance recording four RBIs and one walk. The Rangers left seven runners on base outhitting UCCS 12-8. Three home runs and a double were hit.
 
Next Up For The Rangers: Regis will stay local but travel to take on Colorado Mines on Saturday, March 3 and Sunday March 4. First pitch on Saturday is set for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
