Box Score SAN ANGELO, Tex. – The Regis University baseball team (1-0) opened their 2017 season with a 5-1 win over the Angelo State University Rams (0-1) thanks to dominant pitching and timely hitting.
Senior
Brad Thoutt (1-0) picked up the season-opening win as he hurled seven strong innings, surrendering four hits, striking out four batters and allowing only one run. Fellow senior
Max Fabricant led the way offensively as he went a perfect 5-for-5 on the day.
How It Happened: Thoutt gave up his lone earned run in the first inning, but after settling in he began to mow through the ASU lineup. In the third inning, Regis pushed their first run across the board with a single from Fabricant, knotting the score at one.
The Rangers scratched across runs in the fourth and fifth innings on singles from juniors
Zach Dedin and
Connor Rochon to extend their lead, but they put the nail in the coffin in the seventh inning as they scored two insurance runs to give them a 5-1 lead.
Game Notes: Juniors
Andrew Bryniarski (2-4), Rochon (2-5, 2 RBI's) and
Garrett Skillings (2-4, 2 2B) all had two hits in the effort, while fellow junior Dedin (1-4, RBI) was the only other player to register a hit. As a team RU had 12 hits on the day, they did not commit a single error in the field and two players drew walks. Redshirt-sophomore
Matt Heibult pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning in his first appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery a season ago. Senior
Adam Montano came on to pitch a perfect ninth inning, striking out two batters and getting the other to groundout.
Next Up for the Rangers: The baseball team will play Angelo State University two more times over the weekend with one game scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow followed by the series finale on Sunday at noon.
