Box Score 2 LUBBOCK, Tex. – The Regis University softball team opened the 2017 season with a dominating 12-1 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State but fell in the second game of the day 10-1 to Lubbock Christian, the hosts of the tournament.
Bradey King led on the day going 5-for-7 at the plate. She came across the plate once, recorded a walk and an RBI.
Macy Cox, the designated player, chipped in going 2-for-4 in the box, including a single-run home run in the second game.
Emily John went 3-for-8 at the plate and recorded three RBIs.
Game 1: Carlie Sexton put the Rangers on the board first with a single to center in the top of the second. Northwestern Oklahoma State evened things up in the bottom half of the inning with a single of their own.
King brought the go-ahead run across in the top of the fourth to be followed by another in the top of the fifth off a single from
Alyssa Finger. RU held a 3-1 lead heading into the sixth inning. The Regis bats really got swinging in the top of the sixth as the Rangers put up a nine-spot to increase their lead to 12-1.
A pair of doubles from Finger and
Lauren Hernandez and a single ushered in the wave of Regis scoring. John capped things off with a three-run home run to right center. With help from six Northwestern Oklahoma State errors, RU cruised to their first win of the season.
Game Notes: Logan Losh earned her first start on the mound as a Ranger throwing in all six innings. She allowed just one run on two hits while giving up three walks and tallying two strikeouts. Losh faced 23 batters on her way to a 1-0 start on the season. RU stole five bases led by King with two and Cox with two. Regis committed no errors. The Rangers left nine runners on base.
Game 2: Lubbock Christian jumped out to an early 2-0 in the bottom of the first.
Macy Cox knocked a single-run home run over the left centerfield fence in the top of the third. After that home run, the Rangers were within one, 2-1, but that would end up being the only run for RU of the game.
The Lady Chaps brought four across in the bottom of the third and then again in the fifth. A Lubbock Christian two-run homer enforced the run-rule in the bottom of the fifth.
Game Notes: The Rangers were unable to capitalize leaving four runners stranded on second at different points throughout the game. Regis recorded six hits led by King with two.
Taylor Armitage recorded her first start on the mound for RU.
Cortney Sexton pitched in the final 1.2 innings of the game.
Up Next For The Rangers: Regis is back in action Saturday, February 4 for another pair of games at the Lady Chap Invitational. RU will first face Texas-Permian Basin at 1:30 p.m. and then match up against Northwestern Oklahoma State again at 4 p.m.
