Box Score SAN ANGELO, Tex. – The Regis University baseball team (1-1) lost the second game of a three-game set, 5-3, with the Angelo State University Rams (1-1) as a walk-off three-run homerun ended the game in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Junior
Noah Gotsis went six innings giving up seven hits and allowing only two earned runs. Redshirt-sophomore
Matt Heibult followed with two no-hit innings in the seventh and eighth, but it was the ninth inning that conquered Regis.
How It Happened: As was the case in the game yesterday, ASU scored first taking a 2-0 lead after the first two innings. The Rangers countered with a run in the third inning to cut the lead to one run as senior
Max Fabricant hit a solo homerun, his first of the year.
Two innings later, RU took the lead when junior
Connor Rochon to right field scoring Fabricant and senior
Josh Newell on the play. Rochon was tagged out at third base on the play.
After not scoring any runs in the top of the ninth, Regis took the field looking for the final three outs, and their second consecutive win to start the season. A leadoff triple from the home team put the Rams in very good position to tie the game. Senior
Adam Montano struck out the next batter to ease the suspense, but then walked the next batter.
Mitch Henshaw stepped to the plate as a pinch-hitter and after seeing one ball, he connected on the second pitch and sent it over the fence for a walk-off three-run homerun, and ASU's first win of the season.
Game Notes: Despite his effort, Gotsis earned a no-decision as he struck out eight batters without allowing a single walk. Fabricant (2-4, HR, RBI) continued his tear at the plate as he collected two more hits and scored two runs on the day. Rochon (1-4, 2B, 2 RBI's) drove in the only other runs for the Rangers in the game. Juniors
Andrew Bryniarski (1-3, BB) and
Christian Bitar (1-3, BB) were the only other RU payers to register a hit in the game.
Next Up for the Rangers: The baseball team will return to the diamond for the series finale at noon tomorrow in the decisive game three.
