Rangers earn pair of wins in second day of competition

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LUBBOCK, Tex. – The Regis University softball team earned a pair of wins in the second day of competition at the Lady Chap Invitational. The Rangers defeated Texas-Permian Basin in the first game 7-1 and matched up against Northwestern Oklahoma State for the second time this weekend pulling out the 7-6 victory in extra innings.

Delaney McGinn led Regis offensively going 4-for-6 on the day. Carlie Sexton went 4-for-7 at the plate. King added a 4-for-9 performance at the plate that included scoring two runs and tallying two RBIs.

Game 1: The Rangers bounced back from a slow offensive start yesterday as King picked right up where she left off. In her first at bat she singled through the left side and immediately stole second. Carlie Sexton doubled to left center, in her first at bat as well, to score King and put Regis ahead 1-0 after the first half inning of play.

The Falcons evened up the score in the bottom half of the first with a single-run home run. Logan Losh, recorded three-straight strikeouts in the bottom of the second as the score remained locked at 1-1. An offensively productive fifth inning allowed the Rangers to take a 5-1 lead kicked off with a pair of singles from Breana Pearsall and Melissa Heronema.

Sealing the victory in the top half of the seventh was Losh with the fourth double of the game that scored Michelle Larose.

Game Notes: The Rangers stole five bases while the Falcons had none. Losh earned her second-straight win throwing in all seven innings. Losh allowed one earned run on seven hits while striking out seven batters. King went 2-for-4 at the plate while Sexton recorded two RBIs. Each team left six runners stranded on base.

Game 2: Northwestern Oklahoma State went ahead on the Rangers 3-0 with a three-run shot over the centerfield fence in the top of the second. Regis quickly responded evening things up at 3-3 in the bottom half of that inning as Emily John placed a ball in left center that scored Heronema and Laura Scheffel.

Northwestern Oklahoma moved ahead again 4-3 in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly but RU responded once again. Regis held their first lead of the game at 5-4 after four innings of play.

The score would once again lock at 5-5 after Northwestern Oklahoma brought one across in the top of the sixth that the Rangers could not match in the bottom half. NOSU scored the go-ahead run on two outs in the top of the seventh, 6-5.

With bases loaded on two outs in the bottom of the seventh and help from the Northwestern Oklahoma State pitcher a runner came across the plate to send the game into extra innings, 6-6.

The Rangers put up a strong defensive effort in the top of the eighth to hold NOSU scoreless. King gave RU the winning run on a single through the left side to score Heronema, who was placed on second.

Game Notes: Solid base running from Regis led to seven stolen bases led by McGinn and Heronema each with two. The Rangers left nine runners on base throughout the game to NOSU's six. RU went down in the books for 14 hits to just Northwestern Oklahoma's seven. John and Sexton both recorded a double. Taylor Armitage started the game on the mound for Regis pitching through 5.1 innings. Losh finished out the game to earn her third win on the season. Heronema was 2-for-3 at the plate and came across the plate three times.
