Box Score DENVER, Colo. – The No. 22 Regis University women's basketball team bounced back from an overtime heartbreaker to defeat the Colorado Christian Cougars 65-59. Regis improves to an overall mark of 17-4 overall and 12-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Three Rangers recorded double-digit scoring numbers led by
Mary Sigler with 17. Sigler went 6-for-13 from the field, 3-for-8 from distance and 2-for-4 from the line while chipping in with five rebounds and one steal.
Majestie Robinson added 14 points while
Chante Church put up 11 as the two combined to shoot 8-of-13 from the charity stripe.
How It Happened: A much different game than last night's physicality, the Rangers experienced a slower start against the Cougars. CCU showed a zone in the beginning in hopes of clogging up the middle and forcing RU's shooters to knock down shots.
The Cougars strategy proved successful as Regis struggled shooting from distance throughout the first half going just 2-for-12 from three. Colorado Christian switched to man-to-man at the beginning of the second quarter allowing the Rangers to take advantage of a dribble drive. The lead changed a total of seven times throughout the first half as CCU headed into halftime with the upper hand, 27-24.
At the first media timeout of the third quarter, the Cougars began to slowly extend the lead to 38-31 but the Rangers closed out the quarter with a 10-1 to even the score at 39-39. Regis heightened the level of intensity with a 9-2 run capped by a pair of three's from Robinson and Sigler. That run swung momentum in favor of the home team as RU held their largest lead of the game at 52-46 with just under five minutes to play in the fourth quarter.
The Rangers continued dominating on both ends of the court getting crucial defensive stops while converting points on the board. With a minute to play, RU held a 58-48 lead over the Cougars. Regis once again proved resilient never backing down from a challenge overcoming a first half offensive shooting slump.
Game Notes: The Rangers dominated on the glass outrebounding the Cougars 51-41.
Kaylie Rader pulled down a 13 boards, eight of which were offensive.
Karlyn Johnson also recorded double-digit boards with ten. Regis converted 11 second chance points on 18 offensive boards. Johnson swatted four of RU's six blocks. The Rangers tallied 11 assists led by Robinson with four. Regis shot 33.9 percent (21-62), 27.3 percent (6-22) and 63 percent (17-27) from the line. RU tied the score six different times and the lead exchanged hands 12 times.
Next Up For The Rangers: Regis is back on the road at UC-Colorado Springs and MSU Denver on Friday, February 10 and Saturday, February 11. Tip-off at UCCS is set for 5:30 p.m. and the following night at MSU Denver at 5 p.m.
