Rangers streak moves to six straight

LAKEWOOD, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (14-7, 8-3 RMAC) picked up two more wins against the Colorado Christian University Cougars (6-15, 0-7 RMAC) Saturday afternoon, scoring 10 runs in the first game and unleashing for 22 runs in the second.

The 22 runs scored in game two marks a season-high and is the third highest run output for a Rangers team in program history. A day after junior Andrew Bryniarski went off for a career-high six RBI's, his fellow teammate junior Christian Bitar followed suit and recorded a career-high six RBI's himself today. Bitar finished the day with a total of nine RBI's as he collected three in the first game as well.

Game One: RU scored two in the first, three in the second and two in the third to take an early 7-0 lead. It was at that point that the Cougars mounted a small comeback as they brought the deficit to only three runs after the fifth inning at 7-4.

A walk to Bitar in the sixth with the bases loaded brought senior Max Fabricant in to push the Regis lead to 8-4, followed by a sacrifice fly bringing in freshman Ryan Tierney extending the lead to 9-4. The bottom of the sixth saw CCU cut the lead to two runs, 9-7, but the Rangers added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and that proved to be the final score at 10-7. Junior Patrick Kenny (S, 2) came on to close out the game and earned his second save of the season.

Game Notes: Junior Chris Quackenbush (W, 2-2) earned his second win of the season going five innings giving up ten hits, three walks, but only four earned runs. Quackenbush struck out two batters on the day, getting seven fly outs and four ground outs. Senior Josh Newell went a perfect 3-for-3 from the dish with a double.

Sophomore Logan Heflebower connected on his first home run of the season going 2-for-4 and driving in two RBI's. Junior Chris Kobar also had two hits in three trips to the plate in game one.

Game Two: RU enjoyed another offensive explosion in game two as they scored 22 runs, the third most runs in a single-game in program history. The team scored in every inning except for the top of the seventh.

Their biggest inning came in the top of the fifth when they unleashed for 11 runs. Bitar helped out with five RBI's in the top of the fifth inning alone coming to the plate twice, crushing a two-run home run to left field and doubling to left-center to clear the bases. The 22nd run of the game came on a fielder's choice in the top of the sixth, scoring junior Garrett Skillings.

Game Notes: Redshirt-sophomore Matt Heibult (W, 2-1) pitched five strong innings, giving up eight hits and allowing only three earned runs on the day. Heibult struck out five batters, walked three, all while getting four fly outs and five ground outs. Tierney went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate, driving in one run and scoring three of his own.

Four players had three hits in the game, while a total of 11 players contributed to 24 hits overall. Fabricant (3-4, 2B, 2R) and redshirt-senior Geordy Smith (3-4, 2 2B, 4 R) each had four RBI's in the game, and Newell added two RBI's of his own going 1-for-4 from the plate.

Up Next for the Rangers: The teams will finish the series with the fourth and final game of the series will tomorrow at 2 p.m.
