Late inning long balls doom Rangers

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (24-12, 17-8 RMAC) lost to the conference-leading Colorado Mesa University Mavericks (27-8, 19-2 RMAC) 10-3 in their first encounter this season.

Senior Josh Newell extended his current hit streak to nine-straight games but the Rangers were topped by Colorado Mesa University thanks in large part to the long ball.

How it Happened: The conference-leading Mavericks struck first getting two runs in the top of the first inning, giving Regis an early obstacle to overcome. It was not until the bottom of the second that the Rangers got their first hit, but it was short lived.

CMU scratched across another run in the top of the third inning, but it was unearned as the base runner had reached on an error earlier in the inning. Regis got a base runner on by way of a walk in the bottom of the third inning. Redshirt-sophomore Logan Heflebower got his first hit of the game sending a shot through the right side putting runners on first and second base for the Rangers. However, the home squad was unable to capitalize for the second-straight inning.

The bottom of the fourth inning was very eventful as the first two batters for RU reached base on errors by the second baseman and right fielder, respectively. The Mavericks pitcher attempted to pick-off junior Christian Bitar at second base, but another error allowed both runners to move up. With the runners on second and third, junior Garrett Skillings grounded out to second base which allowed Bitar to sprint home for the first run of the game for Regis, cutting the deficit to two runs 3-1.

The Rangers got another run with a sacrifice fly to center field from freshman Ryan Tierney that cut the visitors lead to only one run, 3-2, after the sixth inning. CMU exploded with a two-run and three-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to extend their lead to 8-2.

Another home run from the visitors in the top of the ninth gave the visitors a 10-2 lead. RU threatened with two outs in their final half of the ninth, plating one run, but were unable to mount the big comeback they needed, falling 10-3 to the Mavericks.

Game Notes: Junior Noah Gotsis (L, 5-2) earned only his second loss of the season as he pitched well for most of the game. The righty went 7.2 innings, allowing nine hits and four earned runs while striking out seven batters. Bitar (2-5, R) and Heflebower (2-5, RBI) recorded two hits apiece to lead the team, with four others picking up hits in the game. The two teams combined for 10 errors, making five apiece. Junior Chris Kobar (1-3, 2B) was the lone Ranger to collect an extra base hit when he doubled in the ninth inning.

Next Up for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will host three more very important games with the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks with a doubleheader set for Friday at noon and 3 p.m. and the series finale on Saturday at noon.
