Game Recap: Baseball |

CMU bests Regis in both games on Friday

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (24-14, 17-10 RMAC) lost both games of the Friday doubleheader with the conference-leading Colorado Mesa University Mavericks (29-8, 21-2 RMAC) 10-5, and 10-4.

Newell extends his hit streak to ten games, and Bryniarski blasts two homers but the Mavericks proved to be too powerful offensively as they corraled the Rangers in both games on Friday afternoon.

Game One: Regis came out swinging in the bottom of the first inning as senior Josh Newell continued his tear at the plate, crushing a two-run home run to right field for the first runs of the game.

CMU came to bat in the top of the second inning and they did some damage. The biggest shots of the inning came by way of home runs as the Mavericks hit a three run home run followed a couple batters later by a two-run shot that gave the Mavericks a 5-2 lead. The visitors added one more run in the inning to take a 6-2 lead early in the game.

More big hits for CMU in the top of the fourth added two runs to their lead, extending the Rangers deficit to six runs, 8-2 midway through the game. Trailing 9-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, RU loaded the bases with one out with a great chance to cut into the lead. Redshirt-sophomore Logan Heflebower sent a fly ball to right field for a sacrifice fly, bringing junior Chris Kobar in to score. That is all Regis could muster as the next batter grounded out and the Rangers found themselves behind 9-3 with only two innings to go.

The visitors tacked on another run in the top of the sixth with their 17th hit of the game to take a 10-3 lead. RU came to bat in the bottom of the sixth and after a single from junior Garrett Skillings, redshirt-senior Geordy Smith stepped up and delivered a two-run dinger over the left center field fence. Regis trailed 10-5 after Smith's blast, but they failed to score any more runs in the inning despite putting two runners on base.

CMU closed out the ninth inning without any damage to earn their 20th conference win of the season while the 10-5 loss gave RU their ninth conference loss in 2017.

Game Notes: Senior Adam Montano (L, 4-3) was credited with the loss despite lasting only 1.1 innings, allowing six earned runs on nine hits. Five hitters recorded one hit in the game with Newell (1-3, HR) and Smith (1-3, HR) each launching two-run home runs and driving in two RBI's each.

Game Two: The second game of the Friday doubleheader started a little different than the first as Regis found themselves in a bases loaded, one out jam to start the first inning. The Rangers  managed to hold CMU to only one run as they induced a ground ball double play to end the inning.

In the Mavericks half of the second inning, they sent a two-run shot over the left field fence to take a 3-0 lead. It took RU a little while to find their groove, but in the bottom of the fourth junioe Andrew Bryniarski blasted a two-run bomb over the right center field fence to bring the home team within one run, 3-2 after four full innings.

CMU added three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth extending their lead to sixruns, 8-2 after the top half of the sixth. Trailing by six runs, Regis came in to bat in the bottom of the sixth and Bryniarski struck again. The first baseman stepped up and launched his second two-run home run of the game to cut the lead back to 8-4 in favor of the visitors.

In their final at-bats the visitors added two more runs and enjoyed a 10-4 lead with only three outs left in the game. The Rangers came to bat in the bottom of the ninth but they could not get anything started and the game ended 10-4 in favor of the Mavericks.

Game Notes: Redshirt-sophomore Matt Heibult (L, 4-3) had a fairly strong outing as he hurled five innings, allowing nine hits and five earned runs while striking out three batters. Bryniarski was the only player that collected RBI's in the game as he went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with two home runs, a single and four RBI's. Skillings went 2-for-3 from the plate, and Newell extended his current hit streak to ten-straight games going 1-for-3. This marks the third-straight game that Colorado Mesa has tallied 10 runs against RU and have outscored Regis 30-12 so far in the series.

Next Up for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will host the series finale of the four-game series with Colorado Mesa University Mavericks tomorrow at noon as they look to get their first win of the season.
