Regis drops series finale to Colorado Mesa 6-0

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (24-15, 17-11 RMAC) lost the fina game of the four-game series with the conference-leading Colorado Mesa University Mavericks (30-8, 22-2 RMAC) 6-0 on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened: For the third time in the series, Colorado Mesa got on the board in the top of the first inning as they put two runs on the board in their first at-bats on Saturday. Regis did not get their first hit of the game until junior Andrew Bryniarski singled to the shortstop in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Despite not getting a hit until the fifth inning, the Rangers had runners on base every inning leading up to the hit by the way of five walks, two hit by pitches, and one error from the Mavericks.

The powerful bats of CMU continued as they added one run in the top of the fifth and two in the top of the sixth for a 5-0 lead. The Mavericks pitching was unrelenting as they continued to keep the RU batters on their heels.

One bright spot for Regis was junior Patrick Kenny who came on with two outs in the sixth inning and finished the game without allowing an earned run on three hits and striking out a career-high nine batters in only 3.1 innings.

Despite Kenny's performance on the mound, the Rangers offense could not get anything going. The visitors tacked on one run in the top of the ninth and walked away with the 6-0 win due to a four-hit day from RU.

Game Notes:  Junior Chris Quackenbush (L, 4-3) was credited with the loss despite allowing only three earned runs over 5.2 innings of work. The righty scattered 10 hits, struck out one batter and walked another on the day. Senior Josh Newell extended his hit streak to 11-straight games after a 1-for-5 day at the plate. Bryniarski (1-3, BB), junior Chris Kobar (1-4) and pinch-hitter junior Zach Dedin (1-1) were the only players to record a hit in the game for Regis. The series finishes with CMU outscoring Regis 36-12 through four games.

Next Up for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will head to Pueblo, Colorado next weekend to meet up with the Colorado State University Pueblo ThunderWolves for a four-game conference series.
