PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (25-15, 18-11 RMAC) beat the Colorado State University Pueblo ThunderWolves (17-22, 11-14 RMAC) 5-2 on Saturday afternoon after the weather forced the game to be postponed in the eighth inning.
The Rangers broke their four-game losing streak thanks to a strong picthing performance from
Noah Gotsis.
How it Happened: Two of the league's top pitchers were on display Friday night when junior
Noah Gotsis matched up with CSU Pueblo's Kyle Lazcano. The scoreless pitcher's duel lasted about three innings before the game's first run would come around to score. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Gotsis induced a 4-6-3 double play but a runner managed to score on the play to give the ThunderWolves a 1-0 lead.
That would be the only run that Gotsis would surrender for the remainder of his impressive seven innings of work. The Rangers knotted the game at one run apiece in the top of the sixth inning, but they finally broke the game open in the top of the seventh, tagging CSU Pueblo for four runs.
Junior
Zach Dedin had a pinch-hit two-RBI single down the left field line, and redshirt-sophomore
Logan Heflebower singled through the right side scoring two a few batters later.
The game was suspended due to weather, and the teams headed home for the night. When the game picked back up on Saturday afternoon, the ThunderWolves managed to push across one run in the bottom of the eighth, but the game would end with RU on top 5-2.
Game Notes: Gotsis (W, 6-2) allowed eight hits and one earned run in seven innings of work, striking out five batters without giving up a single walk. Junior
Garrett Skillings, Heflebower and senior
Max Fabricant all went 2-for-4 from the plate on the day and senior
Josh Newell collected a hit in his 13
th consecutive game.
Next Up for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will continue their series with the ThunderWolves playing two games today at 1 and 4 p.m., followed by the series finale on Sunday at noon.
