PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (25-17, 18-13 RMAC) lost both games of the doubleheader with the Colorado State University Pueblo ThunderWolves (19-22, 13-14 RMAC) 1-2 and 1-4.
Game One: Another pitcher's duel ensued in game one of the scheduled doubleheader on Saturday afternoon as freshman
Cobe Karhoff matched up with Bret Ricklefs of CSU Pueblo. Both pitchers mowed through the opposing team's lineup with Karhoff getting one run of support as junior
Garrett Skillings sent a single to center field, scoring junior
Christian Bitar for the first run of the game.
Karhoff allowed his only earned run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning, tying the game at one run apiece. Junior
Jake Griffith took over with one out in the sixth and quickly got out of the inning.
The ThunderWolves came to bat in the bottom of the seventh with the score still tied at one, and after the first two batters reached on a single and hit by pitch, respectively, Griffith got the next batter to go down on strikes. A fielder's choice allowed the runner on second to make his way to third on the next play, and the following batter walked to load the bases.
With the bases loaded and one out, Griffith walked another batter which forced a run home and have the home team the 2-1 win in game one of the Saturday doubleheader.
Game Notes: Karhoff earned a no-decision going 5.1 innings allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks, while striking out three. Skillings led all players in the game with two hits in three trips to the plate. Senior
Josh Newell went hitless for the first time in his last 13 games.
Game Two: Regis struggled to find the bats for a second-straight game only scoring one run in the second game of the scheduled doubleheader. CSU Pueblo scored one run in the bottom of the first and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead after four innings of play.
The Rangers got one of the runs back in the top of the fifth as Skillings scored from third base on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the fifth, the ThunderWolves scored a run on a triple to right center field, and then followed up with another in the bottom of the sixth and that is the way the game would end an inning later, 4-1 in favor of the home team.
Game Notes: Redshirt-sophomore
Matt Heibult (L, 4-4) earned his fourth loss of the season despite allowing only three earned runs on six hits. The 3-4-5-6 hitters combined to go 4-for-12, accounting for all the team's hits in the game.
Next Up for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will continue their series with the ThunderWolves playing the series finale tomorrow at noon.
