PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (25-18, 18-14 RMAC) dropped the third-straight game of a four-game series with the Colorado State University Pueblo ThunderWolves (20-22, 14-14 RMAC) 5-3 on Sunday afternoon.
How it Happened: For the third game in a row, Regis had a difficult time putting runs on the board. The Rangers scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning when junior
Chris Kobar singled to center field, bringing fellow junior
Christian Bitar in to score from third base. Despite having the bases loaded with only one out, RU failed to get any other runs across in the top of the second inning.
CSU Pueblo opened up their scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring two runs on an RBI double and single from back-to-back batters. The ThunderWolves scored another run in the fifth and added two more in the sixth to take a 5-1 lead over Regis.
Junior
Garrett Skillings launched a home run over the left field fence and redshirt-sophomore
Logan Heflebower followed with a double at the beginning of what looked like could have been a very productive seventh inning for the Rangers. However, two groundouts and a strikeout put an end to the inning before it really had a chance to get started.
RU got a leadoff single from senior
Max Fabricant in the top of the eighth, senior
Josh Newell walked, and Bitar reached on an error, loading the bases for Regis once again with only one out. With the go-ahead run at the plate, Skillings sent a shot to center field that was caught, allowing Fabricant to score, but Bitar was thrown-out at second base as he tried to advance on the play ending the inning with the Rangers trailing 3-5.
Neither team would threaten to score in the following innings and the home team came away with their third win of the four-game series.
Game Notes: Junior
Chris Quackenbush (L, 4-4) was credited with the loss pitching five innings, allowing eight hits and three earned runs on the day. Senior
Nick DiPaola came on in relief throwing one inning, giving up three hits and two earned runs to CSU Pueblo. Junior
Patrick Kenny also got two innings of work only allowing three hits and striking out three. Heflebower and Kobar each went 2-for-4 from the plate, and Skillings led the way with two RBI's as he recorded one hit in two at-bats with a home run and sacrifice fly. The ThunderWolves take the season series 4-2 for the season after picking up three wins over RU this weekend.
Next Up for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will return home for a three-game non-conference series with the St. Edward's University Hilltoppers (25-18, 11-10 Heartland) next weekend.
