DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (22-11, 15-7 RMAC) split their two-game series on Friday afternoon, beating the Metropolitan State University Roadrunners (14-17, 10-11 RMAC) in game one, but falling 8-12 to the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (17-15, 12-9 RMAC) in game two.
Game One: Regis opened the game with three straight doubles from senior
Max Fabricant, redshirt-sophomore
Logan Heflebower and senior
Josh Newell to take a very quick 2-0 lead after three batters. A sacrifice fly from junior
Garrett Skillings allowed Newell to touch the plate and the Rangers found themselves ahead 3-0 after one inning of play.
MSU-Denver would get on the board in the bottom of the second, but found themselves still trailing by two runs, 3-1. RU added another run in the fourth, and then a solo home run from junior
Andrew Bryniarski extended the lead to 5-1 in the top of the fifth. Skillings came around to score on a fielder's choice in the eighth and the defense held the Roadrunners to only one run in the bottom of the ninth, completing the 6-2 win.
Game Notes: Junior
Noah Gotsis earned his fifth win of the year, getting a lot of help from his defense that did not surrender an error all game. Gotsis hurled seven strong innings, allowing only five hits, one earned run and one walk on the day, while striking out six batters. Three players recorded two hits in the game, led by Fabricant (2-4, 2B, RBI), Heflebower (2B, RBI) and redshirt-senior
Geordy Smith (2-3, 2B).
Game Two: After a hot start in game one, Regis came out a little lackadaisical in game two as they allowed the Mountain Lions to take a 6-0 lead through two innings of play. The Rangers struck for the first two runs on the game as Newell crushed a two-run home run over the fence to cut the lead to four runs, 2-6 in favor of UCCS.
The Mountain Lions scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead, and RU was only able to counter with one run in the top of the sixth. Regis got two more runs in the top of the seventh to bring the score within four runs once again at 5-9.
However, three straight doubles from UCCS put them back on top 12-5 after eight innings of play. The Rangers scored three in the top of the ninth with two RBI singles and a sacrifice fly, but it was not enough for RU to come away with their second win of the day, falling to the Mountain Lions by a final score of 12-8.
Game Notes: Senior
Adam Montano (4-2) picked up only his second loss of the year giving up six runs over 2.1 innings of work. Bryniarski had a big day at the plate in this one, going 4-for-5 with three doubles and two RBI's. Newell (2-4, HR) and Skillings (1-3) each had two RBI's in the game.
Next Up for the Rangers: The team will continue their pod series with the Roadrunners and Mountain Lions this weekend, playing UCCS at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow afternoon, and meeting back up with MSU-Denver on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. to conclude the weekend series.
