DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (23-11, 16-7 RMAC) avenge yesterday's loss to the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions (17-17, 12-11 RMAC) winning 8-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Regis picked up their second win against UC-Colorado Springs this season as the Rangers explode for four home runs, led by junior
Andrew Bryniarski who smacked a solo shot and a two-run home run in the game.
How it Happened: Both redshirt-sophomore
Matt Heibult, and the UCCS pitcher, did their jobs to perfection as neither team scored any runs until the bottom of the fourth inning. It was Regis who broke open the scoring with a three-run bomb from junior
Garrett Skillings giving the Rangers a 3-0 lead after four innings of play.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, senior
Josh Newell singled down the right field line bringing fellow senior
Max Fabricant around to score, extending their lead to 4-0. A couple batters later, Bryniarski stepped to the plate and launched his first home run, a two-run blast over the left field fence and just like that RU was ahead 6-0.
Two innings later, junior
Christian Bitar (2-4, HR, RBI) stepped up and sent a solo blast of his own to left center, and Bryniarski, the very next batter, crushed his second home run over the center field fence for back-to-back dingers.
It was not until the top of the ninth that the Mountain Lions got on the board, scoring two runs on a sacrifice fly and an RBI double, but it was not enough as Regis came away with the 8-2 win.
Game Notes: Heibult (W, 4-2) had his best outing of the season so far, dominating on the mound for eight innings. The lefty allowed only three hits on the day, only one walk, and he struck out two batters. He got ten batters to ground out, and nine others to fly out on a day where he could not be touched. Bryniarski (2-3, 2 HR) and Skillings (3-4, 2B, HR) finished the day with three RBI's each, while Newell added three hits in four trips to the plate and recording one RBI. The Rangers now have a 2-1 record through three games of the pod series and will look to improve again tomorrow.
Next Up for the Rangers: The team will finish out their three-day pod series with a final game against the Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
