Rangers improve to 3-0 with win over Griffins

SALT LAKE CITY, Ut. – The No. 18 ranked Regis University Rangers (3-0, 1-0 RMAC) opened conference play with a 4-3 win over the Westminster College Griffins (2-3, 1-0 RMAC) on Friday afternoon.

How It Happened: In a game that saw a plethora of fouls and chippy play, Regis started off early with a goal from redshirt-freshman Will Eslinger in the first four minutes of the game. Senior Jacob Lever picked up the assist on the play.

Eslinger continued his streak of brilliant play as he connected for his second goal of the game in the 26th minute to put the Rangers up two goals to nil. The Griffins responded with one goal before the first half ended and the teams headed to the break with RU ahead 2-1.

The second half started with WC scoring a goal to knot the game at two goals apiece in the 52nd minute. No more than two minutes later, Regis drew a foul in the penalty area and junior Noah Chapleski stepped up to deliver the Rangers' third goal of the game on the penalty kick, giving the visitors the lead once again.

RU was awarded another penalty kick in the 64th minute and this time it was sophomore Porter Milner who slotted the ball into the net for his first goal of the 2017 campaign to put the Blue and Gold on top by two.

The third penalty kick of the game went to the home squad who scored their third goal of the game to cut the lead to one goal at 4-3 in the 89th minute. Regis held on for the one-goal win as time expired 46 seconds after the last penalty kick.

Game Notes: Each team took 12 shots but the Rangers put 11 of their shots on goal to only six for WC. A total of 46 fouls were called in the highly intense, ultra-physical match. Eslinger led the team with three shots, putting all three on frame. Chapleski and Milner followed close behind with two shots each. Senior Ciaran Gibson made three saves and gave up his first three goals of the season.

Next Up for the Rangers: The men's soccer team will travel to Grand Junction, Colorado to face the No. 6 ranked Colorado Mesa University Mavericks on Sunday, September 17 at 1 p.m.
