Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

RU falls one goal short on the road

PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team (3-3, 1-3 RMAC) lost to the Colorado State University – Pueblo ThunderWolves (1-7, 1-3 RMAC) 3-2 on Sunday night.

How It Happened: Things were looking good for Regis in the early going as they got out and took the game's first shot at the 10:29 mark of the opening half, but the ThunderWolves responded with two shots in a four-minute span immediately after the attack. The Rangers collected possession in the 17th minute and mounted a counter-attack that led to redshirt-sophomore Ryan Ebert flicking a pass back to sophomore Oliver Haines who drove his shot into the back of the net for the first goal of the match.

Nursing a 1-0 lead, Regis wanted to get another goal before halftime, however they were unable to make anything of corner kicks in the 42nd and 43rd minutes. This proved costly for the team as CSU Pueblo found the equalizer 13 seconds before the end of the first half.

The ThunderWolves wasted little time finding the lead as they netted a goal in the 52nd minute, just seven minutes into the second half. With a 2-1 advantage, the home side looked to increase the pace of play and ended up creating a chance in the 70th minute that resulted in another goal, creating a 3-1 deficit for the Rangers.

RU was awarded a penalty kick 21 seconds later as they threatened to score, but sophomore Porter Milner had his penalty shot blocked by the keeper, preserving the two-goal lead for CSU Pueblo. Regis continued to press, breaking through with another chance in the 78th minute as sophomore Colton Hefty sent a pass to Haines who slotted home his second goal of the game. This cut the deficit to one goal but there was more work to be done. Despite their relentless offensive pressure, the Rangers ran out of time and the game came to an end 2-3 in favor of the ThunderWolves.

Game Notes: RU outshot CSU Pueblo 11-5, with a 7-4 shots on goal tally. The Blue and Gold held a very lopsided advantage in the corner kick category taking 10 without conceding a single corner to their opponents. Haines finished with a team-high three shots, scoring the only two goals for Regis. Milner put both of his shots on goal with Ebert and Hefty picking up one assist apiece in the match.

Next Up for the Rangers: Regis will be home for the next three contests beginning on Friday, September 29 with a game against cross-town rival Metropolitan State University Denver (3-5, 3-1 RMAC) at 3 p.m. Two days later, Sunday, October 1 the Cougars of Colorado Christian University (1-6-1, 1-3 RMAC) will make a visit to the Regis Match Pitch for a match set to kick off at 3 p.m. The team will also feature a mid-week game against the Colorado School of Mines (6-2, 4-0 RMAC) on Wednesday, October 4 at 4 p.m.
