Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Rangers take down cross-town rival Roadrunners 2-1

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team (4-3, 2-3 RMAC) beat their cross-town rivals, Metropolitan State University Denver (3-6, 3-2 RMAC), by a score of 2-1 on Friday afternoon. Freshman George Berkes netted his first goal as a member of Regis and redshirt-freshman Will Eslinger headed in his sixth of the year.

How It Happened: It took a little time for each team to get going but the Rangers got to work in the sixth minute unleashing the first shot of the game. MSU Denver answered with two shots of their own before RU earned a corner kick in the 11th minute. Sophomore Porter Milner sent in a cross that found the head of Berkes, and he drilled it home to give the home squad a 1-0 lead in the early going.

In the 24th minute, Regis was called offside as they pressed forward, however, they sustained the momentum on the next attack, earning a corner kick. This time the ball trickled out to the foot of junior Josh Burnett who played the ball back into the box where Eslinger was waiting to drive it home with his head. With Eslinger's goal the Rangers led 2-0 after only 26 minutes of play.

The Roadrunners were not going home empty-handed as they capitalized on an attack in the 48th minute to cut their deficit to one goal only minutes into the second half. Both teams continued to move the ball around the pitch, creating chances and adding to their shot totals. RU held strong despite giving up a couple late opportunities and they came away with the big conference win 2-1 over their cross-town rivals.

Game Notes: Shot totals reached the double-digits as Regis recorded 16, with seven shots on goal and MSU Denver accounting for 13 shots with six on target. The Blue and Gold dominated the corner kick category 9-3. Eslinger and senior Sawyer Lincoln each recorded a game-high three shots while freshman Oliver Haines took two shots, but had both of them saved. Senior Ciaran Gibson (W, 4-1) picked up his fourth win in five games this season, collecting five saves and allowing only one goal. Milner and Burnett each recorded an assist in the match.

Up Next for the Rangers: The men's soccer team will go head-to-head with the Colorado Christian University Cougars (1-6-1, 1-3 RMAC) on Sunday, October 1 at 3 p.m. at the Regis Match Pitch before hosting Colorado Mines (6-2, 4-0 RMAC) on Wednesday, October 4 for their lone regular season matchup this year.
