DENVER, Colo. - In their season opener, the Regis University men's soccer team (1-0) dominated the Concordia University Cavaliers (1-2) all day long. Regis came away with the victory 3-0 with goals coming from freshman
John Halter, and seniors
Jacob Lever and
Sawyer Lincoln.
How It Happened: The Rangers wasted little time offensively as they drew first-blood with a goal from Halter after only 4:38 of play. Junior
Josh Burnett sent a throw-in deep into the box that reached the head of Halter.
With the 1-0 lead, RU continued to hold a major advantage in possession. The second goal of the half came as Halter sent a pass to Lever in the box, who then made one defender miss, and slotted the ball past a diving goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead in the 21
st minute.
The final part of the goal trifecta came on the foot of Lincoln who joined a counter attack that finished with Lever passing the ball across the top of the box with Lincoln waiting on the other end to hammer it home with just less than ten minutes to go in the first half.
With a comfortable lead, Regis was able to settle in and control the tempo in the second half, just as they did during the first 45 minutes. The Rangers blasted ten shots at the opponents, but none of them found the back of the net in the second half of the game.
Game Notes: RU enjoyed a massive edge in the shots category 24-6 as the defense did not allow a single shot from their opponent to reach the target. The corner kick battle went in favor of the blue and gold by a mark of 8-2. Lever led the way with seven shots, putting five of them on frame. Lever and Halter each finished with three points on the day with one goal and one assist apiece.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis will host California State University – Monterey Bay on Sunday, September 10 at 3 p.m. before they hit the road for a four-game road trip to start conference play.
