Rangers’ Late Rally Knocks Off Mountain Lions in Double Overtime

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team (10-4-2, 9-2-2 RMAC) proved their unyielding determination this afternoon as they unearthed themselves from a two-goal deficit to take down the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (8-4-2, 7-3-2 RMAC) 3-2 in double overtime on the Regis Match Pitch.

How it Happened: The Mountain Lions established their lead early, taking just under eight minutes to crack the Ranger defense as they intercepted a pass in RU territory and came up with netting. Heightened by momentum, UCCS went on to double Regis in shots on goal in the first period, tallying four before finding the back of the net for the second time.

Down a pair of goals, the Rangers came out of halftime refocused. At the 46:49-minute mark, Porter Milner catapulted a flip-throw into the box where Joe Mansfield finished it off and brought Regis within one. In the 84th minute, RU struck again, this time at the foot of Freddie Swales. Parker Klein played the through ball up the middle to Swales who lofted the equalizer over the head of UCCS' out-of-position keeper and into the uncontested visitor net forcing an extra ten minutes.

In the first overtime, neither team connected despite four shots taken by Regis and two from the Mountain Lions. The second overtime appeared as if it would follow suit. Finally, in the 108th minute, Ryan Ebert knocked in the golden goal off a corner kick from Ollie Haines, assisted by Swales, to seal the match 3-2.

Game Notes: Shot totals reached double-digits for both teams as Regis recorded 23 with seven shots on goal and UCCS registered 22 shots, 11 on goal. The Blue and Gold dominated the corner kick category 7-3. Mansfield and Ethan Willson took a team-high four shots apiece while Swales and John Halter followed with three respectively. Chase Webert made nine saves for the Rangers while in net.

Next up for the Rangers: The Rangers return to the Regis Match Pitch on Saturday, October 27 to battle 5th ranked Colorado School of Mines. We will give our appreciation to the seniors as they are recognized for Senior Day before the 11:00 AM kick-off.
