DURANGO, Colo. - The Regis University men's soccer team (6-3-1, 5-1-1 RMAC) currently ranks second in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in shutouts this season, previously totaling four. With tonight's 1-0 double overtime victory over Fort Lewis College (5-3-2, 3-3-1 RMAC), the Rangers add a fifth shutout to their resume as well as extend their winning streak to four consecutive games.
How it Happened: The first half of action highly favored the Skyhawks as they tallied ten shots compared to the Rangers' two. RU struggled to find an offensive groove, forcing them back on their heels defensively. The Regis backline proved to be impassable, however, as they endured six repeated shots as well as three corners without conceding a goal to Fort Lewis.
In period two, the Rangers finally began to settle in. They produced several prime opportunities to score, including shots from
Kristian Hooker and
Luca Kother. But, unable to buy a goal, the two teams headed into overtime in a 0-0 deadlock.
Both teams registered one shot apiece in the first overtime, neither connecting, ultimately forcing a second overtime. At the 108:22 minute-mark, the Rangers were lifted by
John Halter as he netted the solo goal of the match. Halter reigned in a rebounded shot from Kother, redirecting it around the keeper to the back of the net and sealing the win for Regis.
Game Notes: Regis eventually evened the shot count throughout the game, recording 15 compared to FLC's 19. The Rangers proved to be more accurate than the Skyhawks as they earned seven shots on goal while Fort Lewis logged only four. In frame for the Rangers, keeper
Chase Webert notched another perfect game snatching four saves. Halter and Kother paced RU with three shots apiece, two on goal. Hooker added two shots of his own.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis now looks to take on Colorado Mesa University, who sits second in the RMAC standings with an overall record of 7-0-2 and 5-0-1 in the conference. Opening kick is set for 2:30 PM on Sunday, October 7 in Grand Junction, Colorado.
