Regis Battles to 2-2 2OT Draw With Mavericks

Grand Junction, Colo. – The Regis Rangers (6-3-2, 5-1-2 RMAC) were pitted against the undefeated Colorado Mesa University Mavericks (8-0-3, 6-0-2 RMAC) in today's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference showdown. After 110 minutes of action, neither team was deemed the winner as the game resulted in a 2-2 double overtime draw.

How it Happened: Colorado Mesa opened up the scoring in the 24th minute as the Mavericks earned a penalty kick following a yellow card assessed to Regis. The Rangers responded to Mesa's goal shortly thereafter as Kristian Hooker netted his first goal of the season, relaying a wayward header from Freddie Swales at the 38:07-minute mark. Home nor visiting team was able to convert again before the first 45 minutes was up to go into halftime tied at 1-1.

In the second half, it was Regis that was first to strike, taking the lead in the 66th minute. John Halter sent a textbook pass from outside the box to Parker Klein who delivered a header swiftly past the keeper. It looked as if the Rangers were going to spoil the Mavericks' perfect season and win the upset bid. However, with just over two minutes remaining, Colorado Mesa drove home the equalizer for the third header of the game.

In the first sudden victory overtime, Regis held Mesa to just one shot while taking two of their own as well as a corner. As time dwindled down, neither team garnered a golden goal and a second overtime was required. Another ten minutes later the score still remained knotted and would end in a 2-2 tie.

Game Notes: The Mavericks outpaced Regis in shots as well as shots on goal, earning a 22-11 margin and 6-4 edge. Mesa also received more corner kicks, tallying six to RU's four. In net for the Rangers, Chase Webert made four saves on 21 shots faced. Hooker and Swales paced Regis in shots, both recording three apiece.

Up Next for the Rangers: Regis will take to the road again next weekend as they travel to Alamosa, Colorado for a 3:00 PM match-up with Adams State University on Friday, October 12. That is followed with a 2:30 PM contest against Colorado State University-Pueblo on Sunday, October 14 in Pueblo, Colorado.
