CANYON, TEXAS – The Regis University women's basketball team celebrated a season-opening victory this afternoon as they defeated Texas-Permian Basin 64-53 in day-one of the South Central Regional Conference Challenge in Canyon, Texas.
How It Happened: The Rangers fell in a 7-0 hole within four minutes of tip-off before
Morgan Ducklow pulled Regis back in the game with a pair of buckets from three-point range to bring RU within one. With baskets from
Jaz'Myne Snipes and
Whitney Jacob, as well as a 3-pointer from
Alex Nelson, Regis was able to finish the first quarter with a 15-11 advantage.
The two teams continued to battle in the second period, tying 16-16 at the 8:48-minute mark. With just under three minutes to go, the Rangers led by six, but fell victim to a Falcon 8-0 run to trail 32-30 going into halftime.
UTPB went on to extend their lead in the third quarter following a 6-0 run that put them up 38-30. RU wasn't down for the count, however. Ducklow,
Majestie Robinson and Jacob strung together a trio of 3-pointers before Jacob added two more buckets to give Regis the five-point lead at 43-38.
Regis held on in the final ten minutes, reaching a game-high 13-point advantage at 7:15 off a Robinson basket from behind the arc before capping the victory in double-digit fashion at 64-53.
Game Notes: RU shot 35.5% from the field, going 22-for-62 while turning in a 29.7% (11-37) performance from 3-point range. Regis pulled down 35 boards, holding the Falcons to 25 while crushing them in assists by a margin of 14-4.
Three Rangers found themselves in the double-digits, led by Jacob with 16 points to go along with her seven rebounds, one assist and three steals. Nelson finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and two assists as Robinson added 11 points, four rebounds, five assists and two steals. Ducklow contributed nine points in the win and
Shelby Espinosa grabbed eight rebounds in addition to her four points.
