GOLDEN, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss this afternoon in Golden, Colorado, falling 65-60 to the Colorado School of Mines.
How it Happened: After one quarter of action, it seemed as if there was a lid on the basket for the Rangers as they shot 2-for-18 from the field and just 1-of-9 from behind the arc. With less than three minutes remaining,
Emma Sterkel and
Whitney Jacob recorded the only two RU baskets and the Rangers would go into the second period dealing with a 15-5 deficit.
Regis managed to turn things around in the second quarter, opening with a
Majestie Robinson three-pointer just eight seconds into action. Jacob helped pull RU within five on a six-point solo run before
Elly Walters added a layup to make the score 21-18.
Still working to decrease the nine-point gap that stood between themselves and the Orediggers after the half, Regis had to dig their heels in, stringing together a layup and pair of treys from
Shelby Espinosa, Robinson and Walters to close the distance to four points. However, just as the Rangers pulled within reach, Mines shifted gears and still held a commanding ten-point advantage heading into to the fourth.
In a phenomenal display of perseverance and determination, Regis continued to fight throughout the fourth quarter. Behind field goals from Jacob and Walters, RU had turned what had previously appeared as an apparent loss into a one possession game. Despite the Orediggers turning in a 15-6 run to take a 10-point edge, the Rangers still did not give up as they clawed to cut the lead to three for the second time that quarter. As time expired, however, Mines was able to fend off Regis and cap the game 65-60.
Game Notes: The Rangers posted a 31.7 shooting percentage, going 20-for-63 from the floor. Behind the arc they were 6-of-27. Both teams finished with 40 rebounds apiece while the Orediggers edged Regis in assists by a margin of 18-7.
Walters finished with a team-high 18 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the floor. Jacob added 17 points and nine rebounds while Robinson chipped in 12 points, four assists and a steal. Espinosa lead the team in rebounds with 11 in addition to her six points.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis now takes a holiday break hiatus and will return to the court on Friday, January 4 as they host New Mexico Highlands University in a 3:30 PM contest.
