Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Rangers Earn 87-38 Victory Over Cowgirls

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team took the stage this afternoon after 18 days off to log a stifling 87-38 victory over the New Mexico Highlands University Cowgirls at the Regis Fieldhouse.

How it Happened: By the end of the first quarter Regis had more than doubled their advantage, taking a dominate 20-6 lead over NMHU. After jumping ahead 7-4 behind baskets from Alex Nelson, Elly Walters and Whitney Jacob, the Rangers would finish off the period on a 13-2 run. The Cowgirls tallied just nine shot attempts to find themselves in a daunting trench from which they had to dig out of.

Walters kicked off period two with back-to-back three-pointers to extend the Ranger lead to 20. It would take nearly four minutes for New Mexico Highlands to record the first of their three buckets in the quarter. Regis, on the other hand, shot lights out, extending the margin to 45-11 with treys from Emma Sterkel, Majestie Robinson, and Morgan Ducklow

After the break, RU opened up the scoring with a Jacob layup followed by a pull-up three from Robinson. Jaz'Myne Snipes added a jumper while Walters and Sterkel dropped back-to-back buckets from three-point range to put Regis up 60-21.

The Rangers would go on to outscore NMHU 24-15 in the final period. At the 3:16 minute mark, they took their largest lead of the game following a Rebekah Sandstrom lay-up to pull away by 56 points at 84-28. RU capped the final minutes of the contest with a Sterkel three-pointer, the 20th of the contest, which tied Regis history for most threes made in a game.

Game Notes: Five Rangers turned in double-digit performances with Walters leading the way with 18 points on 5-for-11 shooting from the floor and 5-of-11 from behind the arc. She added three assists, one rebound and one steal. Sterkel recorded 15 points, including five threes, five rebounds and five assists respectively. Robinson and Ducklow both chimed in 12 points apiece. Robinson also dished out five assists while Ducklow pulled down five rebounds in addition to a steal and a block. Jaz'Myne Snipes finished the night with 10 points and nine boards and Jacob notched eight points and as many rebounds.

As a team, Regis shot 43.8% from the floor and a whopping 40.8% from three-point range. They out-rebounded the Cowgirls 53-26 while winning the assist category by a margin of 24-5. The Rangers forced 22 turnovers from NMHU while committing just 14 of their own.

Up Next for the Rangers: Regis is back on the court tomorrow evening as they host Colorado State University-Pueblo at 5:00 pm at the Regis Fieldhouse.
