INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The No. 9 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team (1-1) suffered a heartbreaking loss to the No. 24 University of Indianapolis Greyhounds (2-1) on the road on Sunday morning.
How It Happened: In the first 12 minutes, it seemed as though Regis would have their way with UIndy, jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead. However, the Greyhounds quickly responded with five unanswered goals of their own, tying the game 5-5 right before halftime.
Sophomore
Ali Vanek scored the first goal of the second half, but the home squad countered with back-to-back goals to take their first lead of the game 7-6 with 27:33 on the clock. RU got back into a rhythm scoring five-straight goals to take an 11-7 lead.
After their 11
th goal of the game, Regis had a difficult time putting ball in the back of the net. They put 12 of their 16 shots on goal in the second half, but half of the shots that reached the goalie were saved. The Greyhounds capitalized on RU's miscues, stringing together five-straight goals of their own to take back the lead 12-11 with just under eight minutes to go in regulation.
Both teams went back and forth, looking for a deciding goal. With the clock winding below 30 seconds on the clock, Regis forced a turnover and transitioned up the field for one more chance to tie the game.
Vanek cut towards the net, receiving a pass, and taking a shot that found the back of the net. Just as the goal was scored, the referees blew their whistles, calling a foul on Vanek and discounting the goal and giving UIndy possession with 10 seconds to go. The Greyhounds ran out the clock and the Rangers suffered their first loss of the season.
