AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 23 Regis University baseball team (8-1) added a tally in the win column with a 6-4 victory over St. Edwards University (5-5) on Friday afternoon.
How It Happened: Freshman
Marcus Salvato was quick to get into scoring position in the third inning after he and sophomore
Coby Zimmerman recorded back-to-back singles to left field. Next up to the dish was senior
Chris Kobar, hitting an RBI single to right field, scoring Salvato, for the first run of the game. Before the inning was over, senior
Andrew Bryniarski launched a two-out, three-run slam over the left field wall to give the Rangers a 4-0 lead.
The Hilltoppers didn't have an answer until the bottom of the fourth inning. The first two batters of the inning were able to reach base safely on a walk and a single to right field. Senior
Brad Thoutt was able to avoid a bases-loaded situation by dealing a strikeout to the third batter. RU got a force-out at second on a fielders' choice, allowing St. Edwards to put runners on the corners with two outs. The Hilltoppers laid down a successful RBI bunt that scored their first run of the game, but Thoutt got Regis out of the inning without taking any more damage.
The Hilltoppers scored another single run in the very next inning to pull within two (4-2).
The Rangers added a single run in the seventh on a solo homerun to left field by Zimmerman, but St. Edward's responded quickly with a SAC fly to right field in the bottom half of the inning to keep their deficit at two (5-3).
Regis had an opportunity to stretch their lead in the eighth inning but ended up leaving two runners on base.
Senior
Chris Quackenbush replaced freshman
Scott Vinceri in the bottom half of the eighth inning after Vinceri gave up a walk and allowed a double to right field. Quackenbush took the mound with zero outs and two runners in scoring position. He retired his first opponent on strikes before allowing a SAC fly to centerfield that made the score 5-4. The senior was able to get out of the inning without allowing the Hilltoppers to tie the game.
With one out in the top of the ninth, Zimmerman was able to provide a little cushion the Rangers with a solo homer to extend their advantage to 6-4.
Quackenbush retired St. Edward's three-up, three-down in the bottom of the ninth to close the game 6-4.
Game Notes: Zimmerman accounted for four of the 13 Regis hits. He went 4-5 from the plate with two homeruns and two RBI's while scoring three runs. Salvato added three hits on the day going 3-4 and scoring a run. Bryniarski and senior
