Gotsis, Rangers hold-off Grizzlies in double-header

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (12-7, 4-3) picked up two wins in a double-header against Adams State University (0-16. 0-3) 2-0 and 8-5.
 
How it happened | Game 1: Regis got their first base-runner, due to a walk in the top of the third but were only able to advance him to second base. Their first hit of the contest was a single up the middle by senior Andrew Bryniarski in the fourth inning.
 
The Rangers scored the first runs of the game with three hits and one error in the sixth inning. Sophomore Coby Zimmerman led-off with a ripple to left field and freshman Marcus Salvato followed up with an RBI-single up the middle.
 
With Salvato on first base, senior Chris Kobar was given first base on a catcher's interference call. Junior Connor Rochon doubled to right-field, scoring Salvato and Bryniarski who reached on a fielders' choice.
 
RU didn't give up a run in and secured their 2-0 victory.
 
Game Notes: Six different Regis batters recorded a single hit as they out-hit the Grizzlies 6-2. Salvato and Rochon earned the two-RBI's that won the game.
 
Senior Noah Gotsis (2-2) pitched the entire game, earning the win without giving up a run and only two hits. He struck-out eight of the 22 batters he faced.
 
How it Happened | Game 2: Four singles in the first inning was enough to score two runs for Regis and give them a 2-0 lead after half an inning of play. The Grizzlies put together two hits and one run in the first and second inning, knotting the score at two after two full innings.
 
The Rangers regained the lead, 4-2, on a solo homerun by Rochon in the third and a Salvato RBI-triple that scored Zimmerman in the fourth inning.
 
RU stretched their lead on three hits and an error in the sixth inning. A Bryniarski grand-slam brought everyone home to make the score 8-2. Adams State gave it their best shot in the bottom of the seventh but came up short after scoring just three runs and ending the game 8-5.
 
Game Notes: Salvato (3-3, 1 RBI, 1 3B) got a hit on every appearance to the plate. Rochon (2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI) and senior Zach Dedin (2-3, 1 RBI) each had two hits. Regis collectively had 11 hits compared to the Grizzlies 13.  
 
The Rangers committed zero errors on defense and while the Grizzlies were plagued with two. Bryniarski had a team-high 10 put-outs at first base and sophomore Kennedy Phillips added four from behind the plate.
 
Sophomore Cobe Karhoff (2-1) earned the win after pitching the first three innings and giving up just two runs on five hits.
 
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will close their four-game series against Adams State tomorrow, March 11 at 12 p.m.
