DENVER, Colo. – The No. 12 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team (5-2, 1-0 RMAC) beat the ThunderWolves of Colorado State University – Pueblo by the score of 22-11 on a chilly Sunday afternoon.
How It Happened: Regis came out firing on the offensive, scoring seven goals in the first 16:29 of the game. Sophomore
Ali Vanek tallied a hat-trick during that stretch, with four other Rangers netting goals as well. The ThunderWolves got on the board at the 13:48 mark after the RU defense held them scoreless for the opening 16 minutes.
CSU Pueblo scored four-straight goals before Regis responded with four goals of their own before the first half came to an end. At halftime, the Rangers had a 12-6 advantage on the scoreboard.
RU played equally as well in second half outscoring the ThunderWolves 10-5. CSU Pueblo opened the second half with a goal, but senior
Jada Bonner and sophomore
Andrea Macalalad countered with back-to-back goals to stop the momentum. Another two goals from the visitors brought the game within five goals, 14-9.
With 25:41 on the clock, Regis opened up another 6-0 run to take a commanding 20-9 lead by the 14:01 mark of the second half. The run featured goals from redshirt-junior
Sarah Lugo (2), senior Rachel Walker, freshman
Kyleigh Peoples, junior
Wendy Donier and Macalalad.
The Rangers held their opponents scoreless for the final 5:55 of the game, leading to a 22-11 victory and their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) win of the season.
Game Notes: RU was led by Walker and Donier who each recorded five points on the day with two goals and three assists apiece. Vanek and Macalalad each netted four goals, junior
Sarah Myres added three while Peoples, Lugo and junior
Lauren Hurd registered two goals each. Senior
Jada Bonner had one goal to go with her team-high four caused turnovers and seven draw controls. Bonner, Myres and Hurd all had four ground balls on the day.
Freshman
Elle Crawford (W, 3-2) earned the win making two saves in 25:58 between the pipes. Sophomore
Court Huston also recorded two saves in the game, spending 34:02 in the crease for the Regis.
