Box Score PUEBLO, Colo. – The Regis University women's basketball team (16-13, 14-8 RMAC) came up just short, 60-58, against CSU-Pueblo in the semifinals of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference postseason tournament.
How It Happened: The first points of the game were scored two minutes into the contest by the Thunderwolves. Regis answered back on their next possession with a three-pointer by junior
Majestie Robinson. The Rangers scored 15 points in the last five minutes of the quarter and held a 19-10 advantage with 22 seconds left on the clock.
Freshman
Whitney Jacob made a layup at the 4:49 mark in the second quarter to give RU their largest lead of the game, 23-13. From there, CSU-Pueblo went on a 9-0 run featuring two long-range baskets. Robinson made the last bucket of the half to give Regis a 31-27 halftime lead.
The Rangers scored just three points, on a shot from senior
Mary Sigler, in the first five minutes back on the court. The Thunderwolves tied the game at 34 with 5:15 left to play in the third, but after seven lead changes, RU got the last knock with a three-pointer from Robinson. Robinson's three put Regis on top 42-41 heading into the fourth.
Another Robinson three, with 3:12 left on the game-clock, gave the Rangers a six-point cushion, 58-52. In the last three minutes RU surrendered eight unanswered points while going 0-for-4 from the field. CSU-Pueblo's 8-0 run ended the game 60-58 in their favor.
Game Notes: Robinson (6-15 FG, 3-7 3-PT) was the only RU player in double-digits, paving the way with 15 points. Jacob (4-12 FG, 1-6 3-PT), Sigler (3-8 FG, 1-5 3-PT) and freshman
Emma Sterkel (3-6 FG, 3-5 3-PT) each added nine points.
Regis shot 38.2 percent from the field compared to the Thunderwolves 40. The Rangers were out-rebounded 34-33. Junior
Shelby Espinosa and Robinson both grabbed a team-high six boards while Jacob added five.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University women's basketball team put together a tremendous 2017-18 season going 16-13 overall and 14-8 in the RMAC, but unfortunately the loss more than likely concludes the season for the Rangers.
