Errorless baseball helps Regis to a 9-3 win over NMHU

DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team improved to 18-10 overall and 10-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 9-3 victory over New Mexico Highlands University (8-20, 4-12 RMAC) on Sunday.

How It Happened: Regis scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning and held onto their lead throughout the entire game. Senior Garrett Skillings roped a base hit through the right side and moved to second base when senior Chris Kobar was hit by a pitch. Senior Zach Dedin followed with an RBI-single to centerfield, scoring Skillings to give the Rangers a 1-0 advantage.

RU scored the next five runs, giving themselves a 6-0 cushion at the end of four innings. Sophomore Ryan Tierney led-off the third inning with an infield-single by beating the throw from the shortstop. He came around to score on a one-out homer to right field by junior Connor Rochon.

They three runs on one hit and a wild-pitch in the fourth.

The score remained 6-0 until the Cowboys cut their deficit to 6-3 in the top of the eighth. Their first-four batters reached base safely with two doubles, a single and a hit-by-pitch, but the next three batters were retired in order.

Regis added three insurance runs on three hits and an error in the bottom half of the eighth inning. Kobar got the inning started with a base hit through the right side and advanced to second base on a Dedin SAC-bunt. A base-knock by junior Logan Heflebower sent Kobar to third, placing runners on the corners.

Sophomore Coby Zimmerman laid down a successful SAC-bunt to score Kobar. On the same play, a throwing error by the third-baseman allowed Zimmerman to reach second-base and Heflebower made it to third. A wild-pitch allowed both runners to move up a base, scoring Heflebower.

Freshman Marcus Salvato hit an RBI-double but was thrown out at second as he slid past the bag.

NMHU got a hit in the ninth inning but were unable to get anything going and the Rangers secured a 9-3 win.

Game Notes: Kobar (2-3) and Tierney (2-5, 1 RBI) were the only RU players to record multiple hits. Rochon's only hit of the game was a 2-RBI homerun to right-field. He had three of the six RBIs for Regis.

The Rangers defense made scoring difficult for the Cowboys as they played an errorless game.

Junior Chris Isbell (2-1) earned his second win of the season. He threw 96 pitches in 7.2 innings of work and allowed just three runs on seven hits. The junior struck-out seven of the 30 batters he faced.

Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will begin their 14-game road stretch by traveling to Greeley, Colorado on March, 27 to take on the University of Northern Colorado at 2 p.m.
