SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The No. 12 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team (8-2, 4-0 RMAC) survive close call against the Westminster College Griffins (4-4, 3-2 RMAC) as they come away with the 11-10 overtime win.
How It Happened: After the first 30 minutes, Regis held a narrow 8-7 advantage over the Griffins, which set the table for a very crucial second half for both teams.
Through the first 14 minutes of the second half, WC outscored the Rangers 2-1, tying the game at nine goals apiece. For the first time since the game against Grand Valley State University at the beginning of March, RU found themselves in a situation with their backs against the wall on foreign turf.
Junior
Wendy Donier broke the deadlock with her 25
th goal of the season to give Regis a 10-9 advantage with 9:32 left in the game. The Griffins responded with an equalizing goal at the 7:48 mark, knotting the game at 12.
Neither team was able to find the goal that would separate the two teams before the horn sounded for the end of the second half. With the score still tied, the game moved into golden-goal overtime period.
The first three-minute overtime period resulted in no goals from either side, although the Rangers had a few opportunities at the net. After the team switched sides, RU won the draw control which gave them possession in the final minutes of overtime. Head coach
Sarah Kellner called a timeout with 2:07 left in the overtime, reorganizing her squad and setting up their final attempt at the win.
Out of the timeout, Regis moved the ball quickly around the outside of the zone. The ball finally found the stick of senior Rachel Walker behind goal as she cut around a defender and slotted a pass to a cutting Donier who collected the pass and rifled her shot past the stick of the WC goalkeeper for the game-winner. It was a well-designed, and well executed play in a crucial moment of the game that lifted the No. 12 ranked Rangers over the Griffins, 11-10.

Jada Bonner tied a career-high with nine ground balls, adding a team-best five caused turnovers to go with four draw controls and two goals on the day. Junior
Lauren Hurd scored one goal, scooped up a career-high seven ground balls, and won a team-high five draw controls in the match. Sophomore
Court Huston (W, 1-0) earned the win as she took over between the pipes to begin the second half. The sophomore made four saves and allowed only three goals in her 34:11 in the crease.
Next Up for the Rangers: The women's lacrosse team will travel to Colorado Mesa University to battle the Mavericks in a matchup of the second and third ranked teams in the conference. The game is set for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday, March 31.
