DENVER, Colo. – In one of the most electrifying games of the season, the No. 12 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team and the No. 2 ranked Lindenwood University Lions battled it out for what may prove to be the top spot in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) standings when all is said and done.
12
th ranked Regis was unable to overcome an early deficit, falling to the Lions 16-12 at the end of regulation.
How It Happened: The Rangers drew first blood with a goal from junior
Sarah Myres less than 1:30 into the game. LU countered with four-straight goals before RU was able to stop the bleeding. Redshirt-junior
Sarah Lugo netted a goal with 22:45 on the clock, and senior
Jada Bonner added a goal of her own to stop the run and bring Regis back to within one goal, 4-3, with 19:54 left in the half.
The Lions closed out the first half with a 4-1 scoring run that put the Rangers in a 9-5 hole at the break. RU opened the second half on a 4-2 scoring run of their own to cut into the LU lead, 11-9. Trailing 13-10 with 9:07 on the clock, sophomore
Andrea Macalalad grabbed a loose ball and slotted it past the Lions goalkeeper to bring the home team within two goals, 13-11, once more. However, the visitors responded with three-straight goals to take a 16-11 lead with less than three minutes remaining in the game.
RU battled hard in the midfield but they were unable to get the draw controls that they needed down the stretch, which took their high-powered offense out of the game for long stretches at a time. Myres scored a goal with 49 seconds on the clock, but when the horn sounded No. 2 ranked LU came away with the 16-12 win.
Game Notes: This marks only the fourth time this season that Regis has been held under 13 goals, and they are 1-3 in those games. The draw control battles seemed to plague the Rangers the most as they were constantly on the defensive, looking to force turnovers and make big saves at the net. Bonner (3 G, 1 a, 2 GB, 3 CT, 2 DC) and Myres (3 G, 1 A, 2 GB, 1 CT, 2 DC) each finished with three goals and one assist each. Macalalad (2 G, 1 A, 3 GB) registered two goals and one assist, while four other RU players recorded one goal apiece. Freshman
Sarah Kate Dhom led the way defensively with four caused turnovers, with Bonner right on her heels with three. Freshman
Kyleigh Peoples (1 G, 1 GB, 2 CT, 1 DC) and senior
Hailey Nyquist (3 GB, 2 CT, 2 DC) tallied two caused turnovers apiece.
Overall, the visitors held an advantage in shots (38-33), with the biggest margin coming in draw controls (21-9). Regis had more saves (15-14), ground balls (25-21), and less turnovers (16-19), but they constantly started on the defensive end following the draw in the middle.
Up Next for the Rangers: The No. 12 ranked women's lacrosse team will return to the Regis Lacrosse Field this Friday, April 20 for their final regular season home contest of the season when they host Colorado Mesa University at 3 p.m.
