DENVER, Colo. – For the second time this season, the No. 11 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team (12-3, 7-1 RMAC) trounced the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks (9-3, 6-2 RMAC). The 19-7 victory came as a non-conference win, but it helps the in-region record for Regis.
How It Happened: The Rangers improved offensively and defensively since the 16-9 win over the Mavericks earlier in the year. RU scored three more goals and held CMU to two less goals than they had during the March 31 matchup in Grand Junction.
Regis got on the board first with an unassisted goal from junior
Wendy Donier, but the visitors quickly answered with a goal of their own less than three minutes later. After allowing the Mavericks to score, the Rangers went on an 8-0 run during a 14-minute stretch to take a commanding 9-1 lead with less than 12 minutes to go in the opening half.
CMU closed out the first half with a 2-1 scoring run of their own, cutting the RU lead to 10-3 before the halftime break. The Mavericks came out firing in the second half, knocking Regis back on their heels. CMU netted two goals in the first five minute to close the gap to only five goals, 10-5.
The Rangers had an answer for the visitors as senior
Jada Bonner rifled back-to-back goals, followed by goals from junior
Lauren Hurd and freshman
Kyleigh Peoples to give RU a nine-goal advantage, 14-5. The final scoring run came from the home side as they rattled off five goals, from five different players, in the final 11 minutes, without allowing any goals defensively. Regis came away with the 19-7 non-conference win over the visiting Mavericks to earn their 12
th win of the season.
