DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (23-19, 15-13 RMAC) snapped Colorado State University – Pueblo's (23-15, 15-10 RMAC) nine game win streak with a 6-4 victory on Friday afternoon, also giving Regis their tenth home win of the season.
How It Happened: The Rangers first batter, senior
Chris Kobar, reached base on an error by the third-baseman and advanced to second as the ball rolled to the left-field fence. Kobar tagged-up and made his way to third base on a fly-out to center-field by junior
Connor Rochon.
Senior
Garrett Skillings followed with an RBI-single through the right side, scoring Kobar and giving RU an early 1-0 lead. The side was retired when Skillings was caught stealing second.
The Thunderwolves answered with one run of their own in the second inning, tieing the game at one. With two outs, they were able to get a runner on first via a walk, he stole second base and came around to score on an RBI-single.
In the bottom of the third innings, Regis managed to lay down five hits sparked by a lead-off single by junior
Mickey Meinhofer. Meinhofer was moved to second base on a SAC bunt by freshman
Marcus Salvato. Kobar recorded his first hit of the game with an RBI-single up the middle, scoring Meinhofer and giving the Rangers a 2-1 edge.
Later in the third inning, sophomore
Coby Zimmerman snuck a ball through the right side, resulting in a bases-loaded RBI-single.
RU added to the lead in the fourth inning with one run on two hits, stretching their lead to 4-1. The score remained 4-1 until Rochon hit a solo homerun to right-field in the bottom of the seventh.
CSU-P scored their second run of the game on one hit in the top of the eighth inning, making the score 5-2. Junior
Logan Heflebower singled up the middle in the bottom half of the inning, resulting in a run by freshman
Andy Beyene, who was pinch running for senior
Zach Dedin.
The Thunderwolves threatened in the ninth inning but came away with just two runs on three hits and falling short, 6-4.
Game Notes: Skillings (3-4, 1 RBI, 1 2b) led all batters with three hits. Dedin (2-4) and Meinhofer (2-4, 1 RBI) were the only other Regis batters with multiple hits. The Rangers outhit CSU-P 12-10 collectively.
Kobar and Rochon each contributed nine putouts. RU played solid defense with zero errors on the day compared to the Thunderwolves three.
Senior
Brad Thoutt (8-3) recorded his eighth win of the season. He tossed seven complete innings, striking out seven batters and allowing just two runs on six hits.
Senior
Chris Quackenbush earned his first save of the season, after pitching 1.2 innings and giving up two runs on three hits. He recorded three strikeouts.
