DENVER, Colo. –The Regis University baseball team (25-19, 17-13 RMAC) won both games of a double header against Colorado State University - Pueblo. The double-header began Saturday and concluded Sunday after being postponed due to light. Regis took the first game 9-8 and the second game 5-4.
How It Happened | Game One: Regis jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Junior
Connor Rochon reached base with an infield single.
Zach Dedin, senior, followed with a single down the right field line to score Rochon.
The Thunderwolves bounced back with two runs on three hits in the third inning to steal a lead. They added three more in the fifth inning extending their lead to 5-1.
RU scored their second run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior
Chris Kobar singled to left field to kick off the inning. He advanced to second on a steal before
Coby Zimmerman, sophomore, singled up the middle to score Kobar.
CSU-Pueblo managed three more runs in their half of the sixth inning with four hits, two walks, and an error.
Regis fought in the bottom of the sixth adding five runs, one being with two outs. Junior
Mickey Meinhofer started the inning with a single to right center. He worked his way around the bases before scoring on a passed ball.
The Rangers added three more runs on a Rochon homerun to pull within two.
Ryan Tierney, sophomore, closed the inning with a single through the right side to score Dedin for the final RU run of the inning. Regis finished the sixth with five runs on four hits, two walks and one error.
In the top of the seventh, the Rangers escaped a bases-loaded jam and kept the Thunderwolves scoreless.
Freshman
Cody Schultz pinch hit for RU at the start of the seventh and reached first on a single through the left side. Schultz went onto steal second and advanced to third on an error.
Rochon hit a sacrifice fly to right field allowing Schultz to cross home for the tying run at 8-8. The Thunderwolves held Regis to one run to take the game to extra innings.
The game remained tied until the Rangers put it away in the bottom of the 11th. Tierney led-off with a double through the left side and moved to third on a Meinhofer SAC-bunt. Tierney scored the game winning run on a wild-pitch.
Game Notes: Tierney (4-6, 1 2b, 1 RBI) and Dedin (4-5, 1 RBI) each recorded a season-high four hits. They led RU to 16 total hits. Rochon (2-5, 1 HR) was responsible for the game tying run, with a SAC fly in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Senior
Patrick Kenny (1-1) got his first win of the season as he pitched the last four innings, allowing just two hits and zero runs while striking out five batters.
How It Happened | Game Two: The Thunderwolves led 4-0 after three innings. They scored two runs in both the second and third, combining for four runs on four hits and an error. CSU-P held Regis scoreless through the first four innings.
RU cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth. They managed just two hits, but three costly errors by the Thunderwolves resulted in two unearned runs. Regis rallied from the defensive errors by CSU-P and scored three runs in the sixth, taking the lead 5-4.
Tierney hustled down the first base line to beat a throw by the third baseman and reach base safely as the lead-off batter. Sophomore
Kennedy Phillips laid down a SAC-bunt, moving Tierney to second base. Meinhofer followed with a walk and Zimmerman singled, loading the bases.
With two outs and the bases juiced, Rochon hit a three-RBI triple to right-center. The last run to cross home plate was Zimmerman, proving to be the game-winning run.
Game Notes: Zimmerman (2-4, 1 RBI) and Tierney (2-3) were the only Rangers to record multiple hits.Rochon's three-RBI triple was the only extra-base hit for RU.
Senior
Chris Quackenbush (2-1) earned his second win on the season after throwing 1.2 innings. He allowed just one hit and zero runs while striking out a batter.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis University baseball team will not play game four against CSU-P due to the RMAC extended game policy. They will play their last series of the season at home, beginning on May 4 at 1 p.m. against Colorado Mines.
