GREELEY, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (20-14, 12-8 RMAC) fell just short to the University of Northern Colorado (18-12, 2-4 WAC), 8-7, on Tuesday afternoon.
How it Happened: Regis capitalized on UNC defensive miscues in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. Junior
Connor Rochon reached base on a lead-off single to right-field and junior
Logan Heflebower made it safely to first on an error by the second baseman. Heflebower made his way to second on a wild pitch.
Freshman
Thomas Alexander drew a walk to load the bases with just one out. The very next batter, freshman
Andy Beyene, singled through the left side resulting in an RBI as Rochon crossed home-plate. Sophomore
Ryan Tierney hit a SAC-fly to right-field, giving Heflebower enough time to tag-up and score the Rangers second run.
Freshman
Marcus Salvato kept the inning alive by laying down a successful RBI-bunt that scored Alexander. Beyene stole home to record the fourth run for RU.
Regis did not hold on to their lead for long, as the Bears answered with four runs on five hits and an error in the latter half of the inning.
A Heflebower groundout to the pitcher in the third inning ended with senior
Garrett Skillings, who reached base on a single up the middle, scoring a run to retake the lead 5-4.
Again, UNC was able to match the Rangers with a run of their own in the bottom of the third. The top of the fourth featured another lone run for RU, though.
Sophomore
Kennedy Phillips made his way around the base path after reaching on a single to center field. He came around to score on a SAC-fly RBI by Beyene, giving Regis a 6-5 advantage.
Neither team scored another run until the Bears put together three runs on two hits in the seventh inning. Going into the ninth with an 8-6 deficit, sophomore
Ryan Tierney brought life to the Rangers dugout by hitting a lead-off triple. He cut the score-line to 8-7 when he came around on an RBI-groundout by Salvato.
RU left a runner stranded on third base when the last out was recorded and came up just short, 8-7.
Game Notes: Skilling led Regis with an impressive four hits, with a double, on five at-bats. Tierney, Rochon, and Alexander all recorded two hits. The Rangers out-hit UNC 13-12.
RU was also better-off in the error category, committing just one error compared to the Bears' two.
Senior
Jake Griffith (1-1) was given his first loss of the season. He pitched one inning, recorded a strikeout, and allowed just one run on two hits.
Up Next for the Rangers: The Regis university baseball team will remain on the road as they face MSU-Denver on Friday, April 6 at 2:30 P.M. The Rangers split a four game series with MSU last weekend.
