COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Regis University baseball team (20-16, 12-10 RMAC) fell one run short, 7-6, against the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (17-16, 11-10 RMAC). Metropolitan State University at Denver (17-17, 13-8 RMAC) also took a game from the Rangers, 7-6, on Saturday afternoon.Â
How It Happened | Game 1:Â Regis found themselves in a 3-0 hole after two innings. Two doubles in the top of the third inning ended in the Rangers' first run of the game.
Junior
Logan Heflebower doubled to left center and advanced to third on an infield groundout by freshman
Marcus Salvato. With two outs, senior
Chris Kobar hit an RBI-double down the left-field line, scoring Heflebower and bringing the score to 3-1.Â
The Mountainlions scored three more unanswered runs, one in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Salvato reached base in the sixth inning with a single up the middle. The next batter up, Kobar, hit a two-run shot to left-field, making the score 6-3.
UCCS stretched their lead to four, 7-3, with one run on two hits in the seventh inning.
RU managed to get two runners on base with no outs in the ninth inning. Senior
Andrew Bryniarski cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left-center. Regis trailed by one but were unable to get the tying run across home-plate.
Game Notes:Â Kobar went 2-for-4 with three RBI's, one double, and one homerun. Bryniarski also had three RBI's on one hit. The Rangers had just eight hits compared to the Mountainlions 11.
RU committed one error in the game.Â
Senior
Noah Gotsis (5-3) received the loss after throwing 3.0 innings. He allowed three runs on six hits while striking out two batters.
Senior
Chris Quackenbush pitched the last five innings of the game, allowing four runs on five hits. He also struck-out two batters.
MSU 7, Regis 6Â
How It Happened | Game 2:Â Metro State got out to a 7-0 start, scoring one run in the first, five in the third, and one in the fifth. Regis dealt with offensive struggles, no getting a runner to second base until the seventh inning when they scored their first run of the game.
Senior
Garrett Skillings singled up the middle and scored on a two-out RBI-double to left field by junior
Connor Rochon.
Freshman Coby Schultz doubled down the left-field line to lead off the eighth inning. Salvato followed with an RBI-triple to left-center, making the score 7-2. In the ninth inning, Bryniarski led-off with a single through the right side and Rochon sent a screamer to right-center, resulting in a two-run homerun.Â
After an MSU pitching change, the Rangers were able to score two more runs. Sophomore
Ryan Tierney hit a two-RBI single, scoring Kobar and Salvato to put RU within one, 7-6. The next batter grounded out to second base, ending the game.
Game Notes:Â Rochon (2-4, 3 RBI, 1 2B, 1 HR) led the Regis offense. Six other Rangers recorded a single hit, recording eight as a team. MSU put together six total hits on the day.
Senior
Brad Thoutt (7-2) was given the loss after pitching five innings and allowing seven runs on six hits. He retired seven batters on strikes. Â
