ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The No. 11 ranked – and second-seeded – Regis University women's lacrosse team brought down the house with an unrelenting 21-6 win over No. 12 ranked – and third-seeded – University of Indianapolis in the first-round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Women's Lacrosse Championship.
How It Happened: Regis was firing on all cylinders Friday afternoon, but they really flexed their muscles in the final 40 minutes of the game, holding the Greyhounds scoreless, owning a 16-0 scoring run during the stretch.
During the first 18:18 of the game, UIndy looked as if they would challenge the Rangers for a chance to advance to the next round. The Greyhounds held a 6-5 lead with 11:42 left in the first half, which turned out to be the last lead they would hold in the game.
RU rattled off seven-straight goals to end the half, featuring goals from junior
Wendy Donier (2), freshman
Kyleigh Peoples (2), sophomore
Andrea Macalalad, and juniors
Lauren Hurd and
Sarah Lugo. This run was capped off with a goal from Peoples with 14 seconds left in the half, a play that was created from a caused turnover from freshman
Sarah Kate Dhom.
The final 11 minutes of the first half was a foreshadowing of what was to come in the second half. Regis dominated in every aspect, holding the Greyhounds scoreless for the entire half. In fact, the defense held UIndy to only eight total shots. Freshman
Elle Crawford (W, 11-4) was a brick wall in between the pipes, stopping all four shots that reached her in the second half.
Junior
Sarah Myres opened up the second half with two quick goals, which knocked the wind out of the Greyhounds before they even had a chance to find a rhythm in the second half. Goals from Lugo and Donier put the Rangers up by 10 goals, 16-6, triggering a running clock.
RU continued to keep their foot on the pedal, finishing the game with 21 goals. Regis enjoyed a 15-goal victory, 21-6, thanks to an astounding performance offensively and defensively.
