Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 11 Rangers claim Midwest Regional Championship with 15-14 2OT win over No. 1 Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo.- The No. 11 ranked Regis University women's lacrosse team (17-4) shook the women's lacrosse world by taking down the No. 1 ranked Lindenwood University Lions 15-14 in the quarterfinal round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Women's Lacrosse Championship.

How It Happened:Regis got off to a rocky start when the Lions opened up a 5-0 lead in the first 5:45 of the game. Senior Jada Bonner put the Rangers on the board with a goal at the 20:26 mark of the first half. Lindenwood went on to take a 9-2 lead before freshman Kyleigh Peoples and junior Sarah Myres closed out the half with one goal apiece to cut the lead to five goals, 9-4, at halftime.

For the second-straight game, Head Regis Women's Lacrosse Coach Sarah Kellner spoke to her team at halftime, challenging them to get back to playing the Regis University Lacrosse that got them there.

The team responded with a 28:58 stretch where they held the Lions scoreless, registering nine unanswered goals to take an 11-9 lead with 13:36 to go in the second half. RU and Lindenwood traded goals back-and-forth, but the home team managed to tie the game by scoring two goals on the final 45 seconds of regulation.

The first overtime period did not yield goals from either team and the game carried into a second overtime frame. After winning the initial draw control, Regis worked into their offensive set. Bonner drove her way to the net, drawing a foul that set up a free-position attempt 59 seconds into the period. Bonner bolted off the line when the whistle blew, slotting her shot past the four-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Goalkeeper of the Year, Rachel Ortell for the 15-14 sudden-death double-overtime victory.

Game Notes:Myres (4 G, 2 A, 5 DC, 1 GB) was the leading scorer, as Bonner (3 G, 3 GB, 3 CT, 5 DC) and junior Lauren Hurd (3 G, 2 GB, 1 CT) each netted three goals in the game. Bonner was the defensive leader causing three turnovers and scooping up three ground balls. Freshman Elle Crawford (W, 12-4) registered her most saves in a win thus far this season with 16. She spent all 63:59 in between the pipes, recording a .533 saves percentage on 45 shots faced.

The Rangers snapped the Lions 41-game win streak on their home field, bringing Lindenwood's overall home record to 57-3 overall at Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Missouri.

It was one of the gutsiest performances in the history of the program. RU stuck together like the family that they are, climbing their way back into the game, and ultimately proving that they are a team that will not settle for anything less than the best.

Next up for the Rangers: The women's lacrosse team advances to their first-ever NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship semi-finals that will take place on the campus of the University of Tampa beginning on Friday, May 18 at 1 p.m. MST. No. 2 seeded Regis will matchup with the No. 1 seeded Le Moyne College Dolphins (20-1), a team they faced earlier this season.
