Rangers trip up against Angelo State, lose in straight-sets

DENVER, Colo. – The No. 10 ranked Regis University volleyball team (3-3) dropped three-straight sets to Angelo State University (6-2) in the second game of the Colorado Premier Challenge on Friday night.

How It Happened: It was another case of slow starts for Regis as they came out flat in the opening set of their second game in the Colorado Premier Challenge. It was a tough matchup with an Angelo State team that took an early 7-3 lead, which out the Rangers in a difficult spot to make a comeback. RU managed to knot the game at 20, but the Belles had too much momentum behind them, leading to a 25-22 first-set loss for Regis.

The second set was not any easier for the Rangers who found themselves in a 9-4 hole before head coach Joel List was forced to use a timeout. The team worked their way back into it at 10-8 with a kill by freshman Rachel Siurek, but they never quite got over the hump as ASU took the second set 25-18.

Set three looked like things were finally turning around for RU as they bolted out to a 5-0 lead. Later on in the set, Regis was sitting comfortable with a 17-10 lead, but right at that moment the Belles started their comeback. With a 23-17 lead, the Rangers needed only two points to force a fourth set. ASU scored four-straight points which forced a timeout from RU. Two more points from the Belles out of the timeout called for another timeout for Regis with the score tied at 23. Two attack errors from the Rangers ended the set and Angelo State took the match 3-0.

Game Notes: Regis hit .171 for the game and junior Kelsey Green was the only player to register double-digit kills in the game as she hit a team-best .303 on the night. Junior setter Silvia Basso had 32 assists and added two kills while junior Nikki Kennedy finished the match with six kills and five blocks.

Up Next for the Rangers: The No. 10 ranked Regis volleyball team will matchup with Colorado Christian University at 11:30 am tomorrow on day two of the Colorado Premier Challenge.
