WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Regis University men's soccer team (0-2-0) came up short this evening in Winter Park, Florida being narrowly edged 2-1 to Rollins College (2-0-0).
How it Happened: After 45 minutes of action, the Rangers headed into halftime trailing 1-0. The first period saw two key opportunities for Regis to put themselves on the board, the first coming at the 19:40 minute-mark as
Ethan Willson received a through-pass producing a one-on-one situation. Willson's attempt would result in a save, as would
Kristian Hooker's shot at frame less than two minutes later. Rollins opened the scoring in the 34th minute with a perfectly weighted ball in Ranger territory that allowed the Tars to dribble home the first goal of the evening.
Coming out of the half, RU began to use their passes to better set themselves up in scoring positions, generating a shift in the momentum. Less than ten minutes into period two, the Rangers'
Joe Mansfield used this burst of energy to drive the equalizer to the back of the net. Hooker lofted a cross to the middle of the 18-yard box where Willson would intercept with a header giving way to Mansfield's first goal of the season.
Despite the change in momentum, Rollins was able to set Regis back on their heels again as their advantage increased to 2-1 in the 63rd minute. Regis would find RC's defense nearly impenetrable, getting off only more one shot through the remainder of the game.
Game Notes: Rollins outshot the Rangers 9-4, but only led in shots on goal by one at 4-3. Both teams finished with two saves in net,
Chase Webert would stay in play for the full 90 minutes for RU. Mansfield scored the only goal assisted by Willson and Hooker. The Tars would also tally a slight advantage in corner kicks with six compared to Regis' five.
Up Next for the Rangers: RU will now return home to take on Metropolitan State University of Denver on September 7th. Play will begin at 6:00 PM.
