Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

89th Minute Goal Clinches 2-1 Win Over Metro

DENVER, Colo. – With just 11 seconds remaining in the nonconference in-region contest against Metropolitan State University of Denver, the Regis University men's soccer team (1-2-0) secured their first win of the season narrowly edging the Roadrunners 2-1.

How It Happened: While MSU Denver held the advantage in shots and shots on goal with 14 and five respectively, it was the Rangers that came up big on the offensive end. The Roadrunners opened the scoring with a goal in the 36th minute as a shot rebounded off the crossbar to the six-yard line where it was relocated to the back of the RU net. No more than two minutes went by before Regis evened the count at the foot of Freddie Swales. Swales gathered a free kick lofted by Porter Milner, finding the lower left corner of the box to put the Rangers on the board.

The score remained knotted throughout most of the second period despite both teams getting off a combined 13 shots. MSU-Denver was quick to attack, taking their first shot just over the 46th-minute mark but goalie Chase Webert was quick to react, nabbing one of his four saves in the contest.

With 89:49 left on the clock, Ollie Haines directed a strike from just over 20 yards out, exploiting the exposed upper left corner and giving the Rangers the 2-1 advantage. As the seconds ticked away, the Roadrunners quickly worked to garner a final shot, getting one off with one second remaining. Webert, refusing to relent, seized the save to put Regis at 1-2-0 on the season.

Game Notes: Shot totals reached double digits for both teams in this cross-town rivalry, MSU-Denver notching 14 while RU finished with 10. The host team also outnumbered Regis in shots on goal with five compared to the Rangers' three. In frame for Regis, Webert collected four saves. Swales led RU with one goal off four shots, two on goal. Haines followed him with a goal of his own on two shots.

Up Next for the Ranger: Regis continues their road stint as they travel to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action in a 5:00 PM showdown.
