DENVER, Colo. – The Regis University men's soccer team (4-3-1, 3-1-1 RMAC) extend their winning streak to three in a row with this afternoon's 3-0 victory over Colorado State University-Pueblo (4-4-1, 1-3-1 RMAC) at the Regis Match Pitch. Three different Rangers found the back of the net as
Jake Brown,
John Halter and
Luca Kother all tallied goals in the shutout.
How It Happened: The Rangers saw several first period opportunities to score, the first coming at the 5:38 minute-mark as
John Halter released a shot just inside the box that narrowly missed. From there, Regis earned two more shots and three corners, none of which they were able to convert on. It wasn't until the 37th minute of action that RU finally capitalized to end the standoff with a goal at the foot of
Jake Brown. Brown and
Luca Kother reaped the rewards on a two-versus-one situation and a quick lateral pass from Kother to Brown led to a wide open goal and a 1-0 lead for the Rangers.
With just over seven minutes remaining in the first half of play, RU added to their advantage with a goal from Halter. A misplayed ball from the defender landed inside the box, resulting in a duel between Halter and the goalie that would favor the host team.
The 2-0 detriment that the ThunderWolves faced did not discourage them as they continued to attempt to attack the Ranger net. CSU-Pueblo had an opportunity to break their silence in a one-on-one situation but keeper
Chase Webert prevented that as he quickly collapsed on the ball.
Regis put the final nail in the coffin at the 84:13 mark with a goal from Kother to go up 3-0.
Nico Denton ousted his defender clearing room to shovel a pass up to Kother who easily found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
Games Notes: RU and the ThunderWolves completed the game with fairly even stats; the Rangers taking 13 shots, seven on goal, while CSU-Pueblo posted 11 shots placing four on goal. Both teams finished with four saves apiece while Regis held a slight advantage in corners, taking six compared to the visitor's five. Both Halter and Kother ended with a goal apiece on two shots on goal. Kother also added one assist and Brown earned his goal on just two shots. In frame for the Rangers, Webert was perfect on the day, conceding no goals.
Up Next for the Rangers: Regis returns to their home pitch this weekend for a Sunday afternoon match with the Adams State University Grizzlies. First kick is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
